If sitting in the gale force winds and driving rain with not so much a peck is livin the high life, then we were doing it too.

Nice fish Dan!

BTW, that thing sailed clear into the air, the highest I've seen.

The great part of catching that fish is when it jumped, I heard you guys all go whoa! Weird, I was cranking down on it all of the sudden my line went slack, I go oh-oh and Hanson says it's gonna jump and then about 20 feet from the boat, out comes a great white shark with a baby seal in it's mouth. Leaped at least three feet out of the water, does a side to side hippie hippie shake and back to the bottom she went pulling the drag off my reel faster than a locomotive. Then it was either Larry or someone sayin twang it. Ya right, not with this one fellas.

After netting it I held it & tried to hold it up for a picture. Well, it decided it didn't want to be held and started to twist and squirm. I knew from a couple other fish earlier they can be a slimy critter so I took off my sweatshirt before holding it. Come to find out that my forearms took a scratching pretty hard. Their hard skin is like a real bad slimy 80 grit sandpaper. Add some slime to the rubbed raw skin and ya get a nice raw rash. Youch. I'm just glad that tail slap in the netherlands was just a bit outside, that might have been a voice changing experience.

Awesome fish Ryan and Dan!

Dano, your text was the last time my phone was used and it made me smile, so that's cool. NOTE TO SELF - "Phone's can get wet while inside a zipper pocket of your raingear" I got your message this morning and I haven't heard somebody that excited since the college years. Super nice fish man. PS. I pinch the tails when measuring too.

Cheaters!!!

Hmmmm... Mr. Briank said he stretched and stretched your sturgeon to reach 59" but couldn't do it.

So 58 1/2" it is. Cheaters!!! grin.gif

This obviously brings up a good question for Moore's Bait Sturgeon Contest if there is a definite margin of error on length measurements in the 3-4" range on large fish.

We had Dan's fish laying belly down on the steel tape measure. He held the nose to the tip of the tape and I measured the tail to the tip of the top part of the tail, laying on the tape. If I were to have left the tail vertical, and dropped a plumb bob off the tip of the tail down to the tape measure, it most definitely would have been a few inches shorter, and in-line with the reported DNR length.

I will say, this fish was a solid one for a Croix fish and the DNR report indicates 15% above average weight on this sturgy for the Croix. Nice!

Dan's fish also still had the Lamprey marks on its head from when the DNR removed the lamprey. They were slowly healing.

I always have measured to the tip of the tail, as well as everyone else I've fished with.

Even if it may exaggerate the length, it leaves less room for error. I say pinch it. As long as everyone gets the most they can, it's an equal playing field.

I just put them belly-down on the floor and measure from nose to tail. Thats hard enough when the fish want to thrash, I dont pinch the tail.

I need to find a king size measuring stick somewhere. I seen some at thorne bros.. but I think they only went to 54". A 70" bump stick would be perfect.

Why not use a soft tape. Like a cloth or a vinyl type that a tailor might use? Because of stretch maybe?

Not so much stretch but conformity. A soft tape can be contoured to fit the shape of the fish and increase the overall length.

A rigid measuring device (bump board, steel ruler, steel tape laid on the floor) is best to accurately measure length. DNR regs describe "pinching the tail" as the appropriate way to measure a fish, looks like Sturgeon is a tad different.

I will agree with Dave though, that Sturgeon gave Dan a crotch wack like I've never seen from a fish before. blush.gif It was tough to get him/her to behave on the floor of the boat to get any kind of measurement with 1/4" accuracy. grin.gif

You would gain a lot Pier.. The upper fork of the tail is quite long. I could see gaining an inch or 2 out of a 50" fish.

There is going to be some margin of error no matter who is measring a sturgeon unless that fish is dead tired. Its not very often they stay motionless in the boat. I already have a few bruises on my legs from fish this fall that had a fit when they were sat on the floor.. it hurts gettng a shot to the side of the knees.. I am glad I wasnt in Dan's shoes on his last fish! That could have been very bad.

Here is my measuring system. I can't imagine a better one. Tails pinched down to the top of the white ruler, nose to the carpet.

This is a 60" sticker ruler. Someday I'll put tick marks on the inch for those over 60", but I have not done that yet. This girl is 51.5"
