Pontoon with a 250hp outboard

Water Hazard

Recommended Posts

On my way into work yesterday, I passed a truck hauling about a 22' pontoon. On the back was a 250hp Mercury outboard and a 9.9hp kicker.

I've never seen a pontoon with this big of a motor on the back. Is it possible to get a pontoon on plane? If not, wouldn't this just be a waste of energy/money?

Just curious.

Heck yea they will plane with that big of motor. More like take off with the air catching the big deck. I have seen all kinds of big engined pontoons hanging out at the point on Gull. One guy had a 300 Evinrude V-8 on the back, it was sweet, don't see many of them around anymore. Another time I heard something rumbling up to beach in the sand and looked, it was a pontoon. I stroll over to the guy and ask what was in it. It was a 475 H.P. 502 Mercruiser in a pontoon, actually tritoon. It is amazing what is made. The guy with the 300 said it did about 55 mph and the guy with the 502 said it did a tick over 60 mph. Crazy!

A 22 foot pontoon is only rated for a 150. If you get a 28 footer, with three tubes, you can hang a 250 on it. That boat will haul. I drop a 25 foot bennington with a 175 on it, and man that boat was awesome for performance. Bennington is coming out with a new pontoon that is goign to have a new motor called the VECTOR. Its from MERC. Best product on the market.

Was up at West Winds Resort on Upper Red a few weekends back, and a guy had a 4 stroke Yamaha 150hp on his pontoon. Pretty good sized pontoon boat. They wound that thing up in the harbor channel and were absolutely flying when they hit open water! It looked like something was wrong - this great big square pontoon boat had to be doing 40-50mph. He headed straight west from the harbor, and just melted into the horizon, a number of miles out, with that Yammy just roaring away. Simply amazing - like I said, it just looked wrong for a pontoon to be going that fast - WOW!

I was at Gull the beginning of June and saw a pontoon with a 250 Verado on the back of it at the boat shop on the north side of Nisswa and was blown away at how a pontoon could have an engine that big!

Then, I turn the corner, and I see a pontoon with what looks to be a kicker on the rear of one of the 'toons. As I get closer, I see that the size would make it one heck of a kicker. Turns out the boat had two 275 Verados on the back, one on each 'Toon!

Check out Premiers HSOforum. They have a line of pontoons called the VSX S-series I believe. Its a tri-toon set-up and will take a 250 h.p. motor. Its a good all around boat, you can pull skiers, tubers or just kick around like a normal pontoon. Its 2 boats in one and they do scream!!!
