February Trip

Recommended Posts

I have never fished out of a permanant so I asked my wife is she would be up for driving to MN (from southern WI) in Feb. to stay a couple nights in a rental. She thinks it sounds cool so my question for you is: it's a six hour drive (during summer) from my house to Mille Lacs, is there any reason to stretch the trip and go to URL? I am sure there are several choices of businesses that rent permanants on both lakes. I have been to Kathio State Park this year and did not really get to fish the big lake so I would be happy to go to either place. Mid February should be late enough for plenty of ice I think. If you have a favorite resort that rents perms. let me hear about it. Feel free to post pics since I can't get enough, especially with the heat!

It would be worth it to stretch the trip a few miles past URL and head to LOW in my opinion. I have not fished URL but I have been to Lake of the Woods several times and it is tons of fun. I have stayed on Mille Lacs too and I like LOW better hands down. The fish bite durring the day soooo you fish all day and head out to the bars or do a little snowmobileing at night. If you want a night bite go to URL or Mille Lacs.

Here are a few pics of a trip from a few winters back.

Also if you do go to LOW there are serveral resorts - Arnesens, Zipple Bay, Sportsman's, Ballards, (just to name a few) that will let you stay in a cabin with running water, tv, electric at night and bring you out to the icehouses durring the day to fish. If your girl doesn't mind not showering, or having a flush toilet the sleepers are a little cheaper and give you the best experiance if you aske me. My pictures are from Fred's Beds Sleepers on LOW.

I would definately second LOW for that time of the winter, things can get pretty tough on Mille Lacs if you don't want to be mobile, not that URL would be bad either but you also would like to be somewhat mobile there also. Check out Riverbend resort, Charlie and Judy will show you a great time, I know my wife likes it there.

If you are renting a house I would have to say URL......Try to get in a house from kelly-p and jonny-p and they will put you on fish!!! URL is my choice cause all you do is catch fish all day and night.....don't get me wrong there are down times but you always seem to catch something there!!! LOW and Mille Lacs are good times but for me I drive an extra 2-3 hours past mille lacs and go to RED all winter long and I live about 45 minutes south of Mille Lacs!!! Hey with the chance of catching those 13-15 inch crappies and alot of walleyeys plus to tangle with a monster thern it is hard to beat RED......Have a good time and enjoy the ICE fishing!!!!

If a was given the choice for 1 trip for the winter it would no doubt be Upper Red. I have always had a great trips to Red with plenty of fish except for 1 exception or two. As stated above, beautiful crappies, tons of walleyes and a huge northern can smoke your pole.

LOW's and Mille Lacs have also been good to me with many trips there. But if I look at all the trips to each lake, Red wins. Jonny & Kelly without a doubt would be ones to talk to about a trip and they could give you all the information you might need.

Here is Jonny's HSOforum

Red! Red! Red!

There is a reason I keep my permanent house on Upper Red, I LOVE fishing that lake! You usually can't keep the walleyes off your lines, and the bonus crappies are still around.

Like others have mentioned, try to hook up with Kelly-P & Jonny-P. Those guys work super hard to keep their clients on fish.

It's Gluek Light. We have a tradition of drinking bad beer and eating discusting food (any kind of canned or smoked meat)our trips. Each guy is judged on how bad the beer or food they bring is. The worse the taste the better your reputation. Gluek Light actually isn't that bad. It fun to see the terrible dump the guys can come up with. I'm on the lookout all year for bad food.

This is the winning beverage from that trip

Sweet tradition! If possible, I suggest trying a case or two of Mountain Crest beer. They are a newer beer company out of Canada. Cheap yet quality, about 7.49 a case. It is a bit similar to Grain Belt Premium, a bit less sweet, and stronger at 5.5.

I drink lots of Bells products and love many beers, Mountain Crest for the quality/price it is a steal. You got to love the red white and blue can too, reminds me of the older Miller brand by that name.

Well we would love to have you fishingJohn, and your wife would like the houses being as they have cook stoves with oven and each house has its very own private bathroom, always a big hit with the ladies.

Mid to late feb is a great time to be on Upper Red, walleye season is open and the crappies have normaly moved in by that time. Check out my HSOforum and take a look at some of the photos of the fun we have in the winter.

I checked out both Jonny P's site and The Waskish Minnow Station's site. The lake sounds like the one we will shoot for and the sleepers sound perfect. I guess the only other question I have is: how do things work between Jonny and the station? I rent the house from the station and for a separate fee Jonny places the house in a desirable spot and provides bait, tackle, equipment, etc.? Or is that included in the rate and they just make sure Jonny gets the credit since he is a knowledgable guide and the renters may want some of his other services in the future? Thanks for all the replies, I do plan on fishing LOW sometime in winter, but maybe after I talk my wife into moving to Duluth!

  • Your Responses - Share & Have Fun :)

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
