More Lakes With Milfoil

The state Department of Natural Resources said Eurasian water milfoil has been discovered in six more Minnesota lakes.

All but one of those lakes are within 50 miles of the Twin Cities.

Milfoil was discovered in Kimball Lake in Crow Wing County, Maple Lake in Wright County, Spectacle Lake in Isanti County, McMahon Lake in Scott County and Big Lake in Sherburne County.

In addition, milfoil was found in Washington County's Wilmes Lake - which does not have public water access.

Milfoil was discovered in the late 1980s and has now infested nearly 200 lakes across Minnesota. Most of the infested bodies of water are in central and north-central Minnesota. Boaters are urged to continue taking precautions to prevent spreading the plant.

I agree, I fished Maple last year about this time of the year. Milfoil was in the lake last year. I'm fishing Maple next wednesday in a league, need to find a couple walleye's. Anyone one have any pointers?

Thanks,

First off, a lot of people mistake Northern Milfoil for the Eurasion version. A ton of lakes in Minnesota has the Northern Milfoil.. and its a native plant to Mn.. so having it, is not bad.. Its the Eurasion stuff that can be a pain.. It pretty much grows and chokes out all else. I myself feel that the Curly Pond weed is as bad, and even worse...

As far as what it does to a lake and its fishing.. It makes boating difficult. Pleasure boaters hate it.. no fun to swim in.. it also can silt in a lot of areas after years and years of lots of weeds and then decay.. so Rock piles and such can get smaller over time I would think?.. But I might be wrong. Fish however, love the stuff. I am not a proponent of putting Eurasion Milfoil in a lake... Its just pain not supposed to be there. However, at times, it can improve the overall fishing. But make the fish more difficut to get at.

Yes it does.

There is a lake close to where i live, where if you place your cam down and look at the lake, you can see drving lanes in the mil. You cant see it from the top of the water looking down from your boat, but when you place the underwater cam down there and look it over, all you see is interstates through the milfoil

I'm guessing that McMahon Lake was probably infected by way of waterfowl vs boat and trailer. No launch on the lake, although it's possible to carry down a canoe or other small watercraft. It's not always mans fault, just do what you can do to prevent the spread.

This exotic stuff is really playing havoc with different ecosystems around the country, whether it be vegetation, insects, or viruses. Being a fisherman, I don't mind the milfoil, but I'll do my best to keep it from spreading. Things such as removing and checking behind the prop of my trolling motor after I've been fishing on lakes that have aready been infected.

I was shocked at the lake I fish at was listed on the news as a newly infested water. I've seen what it has done to Coon Lake and I hope it doesn't get that bad. But that is wishful thinking. Wish there was a way to get rid of this stuff.

FYI Duffman, McMahon Lake, A.K.A. Carl's Lake, has had an access on it for a long time. Are you thinking of a different lake? This one is on the corner of Scott County Road 8 and 87.

Yep, I'm a bonehead. I even fished Carls already this year. I was thinking of a little pond called McColl Pond in Savage. Thanks for the correction, now I'm guessing it was infected by a boat/trailer combo. cool.gif

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
