dolphin fins on motor

ortonville

Question

i have a 1995 sylan troller select with a 2003 yamaha 60 ph four stroke.i bought this boat used and it had the fins on it.what would i gain or loss by taking them off? i was told that i would gain 4 or 5 miles an hour but would loose the hole shot and it may not get up on plane.the boat is rated for a 60.so i can't belive that it would not come up on plane. but i also have a hard time beliveing 5 mile an hour.what's everyone think?

It is actually true you will gain more speed and loose a little hole shot, but you will get on plane with no problem unless you are overloaded.

I don't like them, so I always remove them, but many people thinks the opposite, so it's just a personal preference. Try both ways and see what you think.

I have a Doel Fin on my 40hp Mariner one of the first add ons when I bought my boat. Gets you up on plane quicker but the two big reasons I like them is you can back off on the power and stay on plane and having the wider surface area under the water helps to stabilize the rear of the boat when fishing in chop. If I needed to replace it I would with out thinking twice.

I just bought one for my 14' with 25. I was tired of doing wheelies all the time and it was impossible to cruise at a slow speed with out a parascope.

That is all solved now. Lost a little top end, but it's a good tradeoff.

Wouldn't you think that if these fins were so great, they would put them on right away at the factory?? In my opinion they are just a waste of money and time.

You mean like good tires on a new car? It's an accessory, some people like stock and some like to fine tune.
