i am looking for a good trainer for my yellow lab. i am in northern Minnesota. i would like to use him for upland birds. i am lacking the training experience that my dog needs. please help. THANKS confused.gif

I am not sure where you are at in northern Mn. To me northern MN means somewhere on the range. If that is the case then there is a gun dog trainer just outside Mt. Iron. It used to be called Magnum kennels but now I think it is something that has the word Captian in it.

I believe their last name is Babcock.

i'm at lake of the woods up north!! my wife brought a lab home after i was out to late one night so i told her it better get trained so i am looking for someone to do that train the lab. Prefer for upland hunting as well. Not really Fussy if i have to drive 8-10 hours either for a good trainer.

I can't vouch for his quality but there is Windsor Kennels in Crookston. You can check out his HSOforum. It's just windsorkennels with the typical w's, dots and com.

THANKS, KEEP THEM COMING IF ANYONE KNOWS OF ONE. IT SEEMS AS OF THE ONES I HAVE HEAR ARE NOT DOING IT ANYMORE EITHER, so i will need to find someone to take care of my pup soon before i go crazy. sorry for the caps. i didn't mean to have them on. but if you know of a good trainer say north of the cities would be superb!! crazy.gif

I'm not sure if this would be too far, but there is a great trainer near Mondovi, Wisconsin (1:45 from the cities). His name is Rick Bauer. I just brought my lab home , my father had his golden retriever trained by Rick as well. On top of being a great trainer he has great property, takes very good care of the dogs, and has been at this for many years. I'm not sure if he has room right now, but it would at least be worth a call.

My 14 month old lab came out of Fischer's Kennels in Avon, MN (west of St. Cloud a bit). She did all of her beginning training with him last summer and is currently back there for fetch training.

I've been very impressed with him and his dogs as my brother-in-law has two labs out of his kennels and he did all of their training as well.

Might be too far south but Pete is definitely worth the phone call if you are not getting a lot of options.

One other thing you could try, There are going to be a few trainers in the Duluth area and the Virginia area for the summer that are from the south.

Try the Virginia retriever club and the Duluth Retriever club.

If you are interested in their names let me know and I will forward that to you.

thanks for the help. i will take any names you can find me. i want this dog to turn out to be a good dog, i get very frustrated with him now and really want a great companion for the kids and a willing hunter.

Dave Davis and Jack Morris will be in Duluth

Dave is a real down to earth good guy. I have only met Jack once and that was a couple of years ago but seem to be very approachable.

There are also some good trainers in Ontario but I think they are further East than you would like.

My suggestion would be to get in touch with Greg in North Branch, Dave in Duluth or Mr. Babcock in Mt. Iron.

If you'd like to see his HSOforum just let me know and I'll send you the link. Greg Schriener as mentioned above is also an excellent choice. He did a weekend seminar for our club earlier this spring and did a great job. I'd definitely trust him with my dog to! Good luck!

I could train him or I could train you to train him.

Labs are so easy to train.They may take awhile to get to the age of being fully trained ,but 10 minutes every day for the 1st 2 months then 30 minutes evry other day ,you'd see a very good dog in 6 months.

Whistle,hand signals you name it.

There comes a great satisfaction when that lab heels up with his first bird.I gaurentee it'll bring a tear to your eye.

I commend you for wanting it trained.There's nothing worse than having a hunting breed that lays around and doesn't listen to you.Why even have it.Rhetorical question.

They are so fun to be with .My lab Buck is such a great hunter not to mention a true gentleman.I know i'd be lost in the field without him . His dad was another buddy of mine.

Rocky Mountain Bullseye.Meathead for short.

10-15 minutes a day doing repetive actions adding in a new thing once the old command has been accepted is so easy incorprate.Having a few doggy treats makes life much easier.

thanks for the reply. i have gotten excellent help here and look forward to a great dog. I must admit that i did bring him to WindsorKennels in Crookston last night for 6 weeks obedience training. my kids cried like all get up for leaving him there last night, hopefully to come back a better well behaved, good mannered pup for the kids and me. I will be looking for bird training for him as well once i see how he does. With all the crp land at my house and sharptails, i really want to become him a great companion for myself and the kids. i am very new here on fishing minnesota but there is so much info that comes from everyone on here. keep it coming!! i will try to post a pic in the future, will be going to work with him in 2weeks also.

Busch,

Have you thought about training him yourself? I know crappiekeith touched on it but it really is alot of fun. I trained my first lab (also first dog I have owned) last winter and it was a wonderful experience. She isn't the perfect dog but she did way better than myself, my family or my hunting buddies could have imagined.

The thing that I had that some lack is time. I was a college student last year so I had alot of time to train her. If time is the issue, I understand. In my opinion you should try to make it work if possible. It is so fun to watch these dogs learn.

      we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.

      I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.

      reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
