Looking for some steak toppings, eh? I can't wait either, but I'd expect as long as the weather holds out, they'll be popping up in a few weeks. Need a good rain and some good heat to get 'em goin'. Do you preserve them at all? I'm looking for a good way to keep them around for awhile. The few weeks they are around just isn't enough for me.

For your area the best time is about when the lilacs start to bloom and/or Mother's Day, which is about when the lilacs bloom. Need some warm humid nights or a little rain and they take off. Before I had a deydrator I just put them on a window screen and set them on the rail of my deck in the sun and they dried out in a day. Just rinse them off and cut in half lengthwise and lay on the screen.

Good advice all, it will be a couple of weeks yet. Dehydraters work very well. Just soak them in water (when re-hydrating) for an hour before cooking/eating and they taste almost as good as fresh. They sure shrink though!!!!! Good luck all!

i wish we could send some of this rain farther north!!! i think we have gotten about 3" in the last 20 hours, with rain predicted for the next day or so.if we get the temps they are talking next week, i'll be hunting them hard! grin.gif

Yes we definately need rain. But it doesn't look like we will be getting it any time soon.

If you are interested in having a place to post morel reports and tips please comment on the following link:

Well I've had my eyes peeled while out turkey hunting and haven't found any yet, but it's probably a little early in central Mn.

How important are elms in finding morels? I've never targeted them before and was doing some searching on this site for pointers. If they liked prickly ash as much as elms I would probably find a plethera of them as it's all over on land I hunt. Also is there a decent chance of finding them in central Mn for a first timer? Guess I won't know until I put my time in.

Best place to look is dead elms with prickly ash around it. It seems that the more scratched up you get, the better the mushroom count. Start looking on the south side of hills/ravines, the first couple of weeks, by the middle of May they are popping on the north sides. I've driven myself half nuts looking for these things ,wondering if I'll ever find any when all of a sudden , you see one and there are several more around it. Then it gets easier after that. Sometimes I smell them before I see them if the conditions are right. But we need some serious moisture this year or it could get tough.

I agree, by this weekend, it should really start to pick up. If you are looking to try some shrooms, most farmers markets or ourdoor market should have them in stock. I have seen them at several outdoor markets. I will tell you though, when you put in the effort to find them, they taste soooooo much better grin.gif! Good luck, and keep the reports coming all!

Success!!!! Checked all my "spots" yesterday but only had luck in one small area - Found about 30 of the small gray's and when I say small, I mean small!! Had to literally get on my hands and knees and gently push the leaves aside to find these guys because when I used a stick, I found that they were breaking off. Fried them up with some butter last night and man they were awesome! I really hope we get more rain that what the weatherman is saying because it was VERY dry where I was. Good luck everyone!

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
