Color vs grayscale? (another eagle depthfinder question)

Hey.. I have the Eagle Fishmark 480... love it... but I have my eye on the 500c... seems to be very similar but for $150 more and COLOR!

Now.. for those who know... is it REALLY worthwhile to upgrade to color? Or is it more of a preference thing?

I got the 332c from lowrance last year and I found it really hard to try and read anything that isnt color anymore. Everything just seems more clear and also easier to read. I also have mine mounted on the dash but sit on the bow of the boat and the color makes it easier to decipher(spl??) hard bottom from soft bottom from a viewing distance.

I have 3 Eagles all Gray,I've been out with color,Its easier to see but I dont think the bang for the buck is worth it.just my opinion.

I like my grayscale a lot and have had no problems with it. Save you mones and buy some tackle or something along those lines.my .02

Color is easier to read in my opinion, I have a 522c on the dash and a fishmark 320 on the bow, I find the 522c much easier to read, especially from a distance.

Just was out the first time my our new 642c. Have the 480 b/w as well, and while I still really like the 480 (it will go on my pontoon at the cabin now) the 642c kicked butt today! The colors is great, the GPS mapping in color is great, and everything worked as good if not better than I expected.

One thing I noticed - was wearing polarized glasses, and of course with b/w or color, you can't tilt your head sideways of the polarization on the unit and the glasses will black out the screen... but the color unit seems to black out the polariztion quicker than the b/w. I.e. you can tilt your head a bit more with the b/w. Just something I noticed, but I will say, the color is great.

Gander has 642c for $512.

Color is better.

It does a better job of marking fish tight to the bottom.

It's better at marking fish in weeds.

It's better at letting you interpret what you're seeing on the screen, ie. weeds, rocks, mud, suspended bait, etc.

It's FAR better at marking things at higher speeds. For example, if you wanted to cruise around to find suspended fish, with a monochrome unit you could only do it at 3-5 mph. With a color unit, you can do it at 20-25 mph. If you use your locator to find fish before you put your lines in the water, this is huge.

Color units are just better at showing you what the unit marks and letting you interpret what you're seeing. It's a new generation of technology vs. monochrome units.

Go with the color! It is worth every penny!

Makes it a snap to find transistion points and also much easier to see in every light condition.
