Tilt and Trim?

I bought a used boat and when I picked it up the tilt and trim worked, but when I got it home I tried to put the motor down and it would not. When I push the button, I can hear some clicking but it does not move. Any suggestions before I take it in. I am not very mechanical on motors.

Is it possible the motor has some lever that locks it in the "up" position (i know most motors do)...thus keeping the tilt and trim from lowering it? Perhaps the person you bought it from may know something. Good luck...please post the solution once you figure it out. You will probably get some more good advice from guys on this forum...very knowledgible.

It's also possible that one of the trim / tilt solenoids went out, espeically if you hear the clicking and you've checked all the items listed above.

Depending on the motor it's a pretty easy repair. If you can provide what brand and year motor I could offer some more advice.

Thanks for the quick replies. It is not locked out and the battery works fine. It could be the silnoid. It is clicking inside the motor just not moving. It is a 1994 Johnson 100 GT.

Boy, I'm having a hard time remembering what the solenoids look like on that motor.

Regardless, they're likely on the RH side of the motor (follow the clicking sound, you'll find them) to two solenoids (which are probably round in shape). Otherwise, follow the red, green & yellow wires that are bundled together to the solenoids.

Once you find them determine which one is clicking via a good ear or a test light. Once you've determined which one is clicking what I would do to double check that the solenoid is the problem is to switch the wires (top solenoid for the bottom, etc). All you really need to move are the blue and green wires - the red wires can stay the way they are. If your motor now does not work in the opposite direction you know the solenoid is the issue. Head to a marine dealer, get a solenoid and you're in good shape.

Here's the wiring key: Red = constant power, Blue = up, Green = down.

It may sound complex, but it's pretty straight forward and one of the easiest things to repair yourself on a motor.

Try to tap the motor with a hammer, sometimes the spring that pushes the brush get stuck.

Your motor should have a rectangular black box on top of rear of motor, inside there's the relays, or follow the cable from trim motor all the way up to powerhead.

I am pretty sure it's a solenoid if it clicks like that

More than likeley its corroded brushes in the tt motor. Tapping on it may get it to go, but thats just a very temporary fix. You'll need to pull the cap off the motor and clean things up. It's sort of fussy work getting it all back together. Good luck.

I would check for loose wires before I tore anything apart. Have someone hold the switch down and wiggle all the wires conectors you can find. My 70 Horse did the same thing and it was a connector between the sol. and the trim motor. just a idea.

Can you trim up? That'll be the easiest way to tell if its the trim motor or a relay.

Thanks for the replies guys. The problem I am having is locating the solenoid. I follow the wires to the black rectangular box, I opened it up and the wires come in from behind. I tapped on a set of screws where wires are attached and taped on them. The motor worked for a little bit and then it stoped. Do I need to take that rectangular box off? Thanks for any additional help.

There should be 2 solenoids, 1 for up and another for down. Check with Napa, they probably have the part and cheaper than dealer.
