huntfish44
I was just wondering if anyone had any incite in how they approach looking for walleyes on opening. Just want to be more educated in my search. Thanks for the information, it is well appreciated. Practice Selective Harvesting!!
gunflint
Where are you planning to fish? A fertile shallow prairie lake, a Canadian Shield Lake, a river system. These are all factors. Water temp and clarity, have they spawned and how long ago? There's a lot that goes into it.
SupaMan
Every lake is different.. You have to tell us which lake you are planning on fishing at before we can give you hints...Perhaps you can also share your own approach as well.
huntfish44
Well I have a cabin in the detroit lakes area and going to fish the lakes around there during the opener. They are all natuaral lakes or canadian sheild lakes that are deep. I dont know I usually find shallow flats with gravel near deep water, use jig and a minnow...troll raps at dark near shore......moving water near creeks at dark...etc....any other good tactic and tips...thanks for the information it is appreciated!Practice Selecttive Harvest!! shae1986
Hunt you fish many of the lakes i do if you fish by DL. A lot of times, matters on water temp, the walleyes are located inside the weeds. This is true on a few lakes i fish on opener such as Pelican. To get them out you can do a few things. Slip bobber in the weeds, troll lindys through them since they are usually thin this type of year, cranks in them or over top if the walleyes are aggressive, or pitch jigs in there. Those are teh best that work for ME. We usually do pretty well early in the year, oh and you dont need to fish where all the boats are, there are many places that hold fish that you can find on your own. A. AaronM
I'll be on Lake of the Woods for opener. Trolling raps, jigging, or pulling spinners depending on what the weather is like! If it's rough and ugly out, I'll spend my time casting for northerns instead. Good luck!
Scott K
I spend opening day with my family at home, its the one day a year that I dont plan on being on the lake. Too many people, and rookies out there! Although if I do go out I just pick a small lake that no one else goes on, or fish the river!
Team Otter
Sounds like you have it covered.

james_walleye
Quote: Always places on the lake the rookies wont find. Especially if its a night run, which i prefer. We fish lighted bobbers on weedlines or rocks and cast cranks and twisters shallow.
