MNice
I'm looking at the eureka pinnacle pass 3 xt & the cabelas deluxe XPG, or XPG ultralight. Bottom line, I'm looking for a 3-4 person, 3 season tent under $200. Any thoughts opinions or first hand experience would be appreciated. Thanks, Jeff
bottomfeeder
While I didn't own the pinnacle I did have an Eureka Timberland 4 man for many many many years. That tent went through a lot and is still going strong with a friend whom I gave it too. What I'm saying is that it was very well built and would not hesitate to buy another Eureka product. bottomdweller
I also dont have a pinnacle but do have two other eureka tents which I have had no problems with. Oldest one is twenty years old, the other probably fifteen.
CPL
I've got a Eureka as well -- don't remember the model name, but it's a great tent. One suggestion, go to Eureka's HSOforum and find their online store. They sell "factory seconds" there; that's how we got ours for about half the price of new. Full warranty and I cannot see any problems. We've used it in the rain and wind with absolutely no problems.CPL
Tippman
I've done some research also and many people have lots of positive things to say about the Taurus from Alps Mountaineering. In fact I recently purchased a Teton 4 from Kelty and am also now buying the Taurus 4. The Teton 4 seems like it might get a little cool the end of May in the Boundary Waters with the top all open mesh.
iffwalleyes
I just got a cabelas XPG ultralight 2 man version for backpacking/elk hunting. They are extremely easy to set up and very light weight. They might be a little thin but that to me is outweighted by the weight of them. Now I just need the tag so I can go use it.
DrKen
Both your choices would be excellent. The cabelas outback is a little more expensive in the 12x12 size but I have one of them and really love it. Easy to pitch, can use cots inside and very usable room. This is a very nice tent and very well built.
MNice
I ended up with a alps taurus outfitter 4. The have a tester program where if you are willing to do a detailed review, you get a heck of a deal. Thanks again!!
Tippman
Good choice, be sure and let us know how you like it too.
fishermn
Good choice, Thats what I buy for my scout troop. Wew have about 12 -15 of these tents, and have had them in all sorts of conditions. The only problems we ever had were when we damaged some poles on a night where we got hit with 15 inches of heavy wet snow, and I have had the window sections crack in sub zero weather. Other than those minor problems they are excellent tents and very robust. Teenage boys are tough on tents, and these have held up for several years with few problems. Wish-I-Were-Fishn
My vote goes to the Eureka Sunrise series. I have both a 9' & 12' model. Easy set-up and lots of room. Also has great ventilation. You can even leave the windows open in the rain (depending on wind) because the fly protrudes over the windows. Good luck - JD
swamptiger
A friend of mine was going to buy the Cabela's XPG until he saw my Chinook Whirlwind 3 man tent. The Whirlwind has a large vestible for gear and the zippers are #10 on the doors and #8 on the windows and flaps. The fly goes all the way to the ground so the sidewalls don't get wet in rainy weather. Lifetime warranty, and less money, too. Google Chinook tents or check them out on hsolist.
