Jeremy, I don't want to discourge you in any way, but I would head to the swapmeet in Twig instead and then go to the Brule. I got there at 8:30 this morning, with thermals, and layers like I was about to climb Everest, but I was beaten by the that #$%&!#$ river. With every cast I had to clean ice of my eyelits, which didn't allow me to present the fly well at all. I accidently dipped my reel in the river and it froze solid so I decided to go back to the truck and regroup (by the way, it is now 8:50 am), when I get there I meet Quickstrike and Porter who are also bundled up like they are the Sherpas leading me up Everest and we decide to wait until it warms up a bit. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I busted the tip of my 6 wt. during one of my ice clearing attempts.

Again, I don't want to discourage you, but it does not look any better for tomorrow. My advice would be to sleep in a bit and head over there about 10. I'm sure Quickstrike will chime in and pick up from where I left them (at the Kro) grin.gif

i appreciate the advice, but if im not on the water im not gonna catch a fish. I have fished in much worse conditions but for different types of fish. i was there last sunday and it was a foot higher than sat. water was like chocolate milk and the river was rippin. i just hope it is clear enough to atleast see some fish. I would fish all day and if i had 1 single hook up weather it is landed or not ill be happy. I just dont care to fish alone especially on a river im not familiar with. chit happens, and it happens for a reason. But if someone from here wants to meet up some time during the day tomorrow that would be great. I'll be by the first bridge from brule i have a silver chev blazer with skidoo stickers on the windows. I'll be wearing max4 camo waders. If you see a (Contact Us Please) that fits that discription and don't look like they know a thing what there doing, stop and say hi... But i will be there as early as i can. thanks again

well.. where did all the steeleheads go????????

Fished the river from copper range down to hwy13 and back up. not only did i not get a hook up, I didn't even see a single steele. the water was crystal clear and nice and low and not 1 fish seen. COLD COLD COLD. air temp of 12 degrees and a nice swim below hwy 13 didn't feel to good. I sure hope things start to shape up. I did however talk to a guy that had caught 5 in 1 pool. largest being 25 1/2 inches i guess. said he caught a 8 1/2 lb steele there on friday. Then i saw another guy catch 2 both around 15 inches or so. I hope i didn't miss my chances of catching a steelehead. never caught one yet.

thats the fun that happened this weekend. hopefully next weekend will be a little better. atleast to see one.

Well, Catfishhunter put the smack down on me this weekend. 2 fish on Sat, and i just got a call he landed a 29 today. Wish i could say the same. I think the centerpin's mojo is buried under all this snow.

I got out today and landed 3 steelies and a bunch of skipjacks. One of the steelies went well into the upper 20's and was the one spring run fish of the day. Hooked a handfull of other fish but had them popping off all day. confused.gif Most guys were up fishing on the gravel, but I focused more on deeper water away from the shoulder to shoulder areas.

Had to brave the cold on 4/6 and 4/7. My brother and I went out of Red Gate and landed 6 steelies in 6 hours total of fishing due to cold. Hooked a quite a few also. The fish where caught on fly rods in the slower water

fishing was good again today, met cheffrey on the river and went 5 for 8. On a sour note I broke my winston 8 wt in half on a 27 in buck that I had to hand line in. (That was a challenge!) And my 7 wt is also out of commision so I might have to bust out the old pfleuger while i wait for my rods to get sent back to me. I got one fish on a black stone fly and the rest came on orange yarn flies. On an even more sour note, we found a 24 inch dead hen laying on the bank with it's belly cut open and it's eggs stripped out. confused.gif

Boy Kent, that is one of the saddest storys I've ever heard.....not only did you break your rod but a dead hen cut open! That's ridiculous!!! Nice job on the 5 for 8 though, wish I could have joined you. Oh well, plenty of fish to catch this weekend.

A couple of questions, as I'm heading out to the Brule tomorrow...

1. Can anyone describe how to centerpin? I'd like to give it a try.

2. Also, is anyone interested in meeting up out there? I'm going solo and it'd be nice to have company.

I fished today and it was very slow. Landed one fish in 6 hours of fishing. Lots of guys out today, I swear there were close to 50 cars at pine tree.

Centerpinning is a technique that requires a centerpin rod and reel. It's similar to a two handed fly rod with a reel that spins freely. It works well for fishing a float with a tight line that is mendable and drag free. I haven't done it, just know people who have and seen it done. DeathRoe can help you out better than I can.

If you plan on using spinning gear I would use a bobber with a fly, waxie, or spawn bag a couple feet down. Don't think that the only place you can find fish is where all the cars are parked, I got 5 of em on tuesday when there were only two other cars in the lot and one of them was a buddies.

Centerpinning is not something you will find much on, and you won't find any equipment locally, aside from maybe a rod.

2 more fish this morning, and i lost the beast of the deep. I've caught fish to 29 1/2" on the pin setup, and this thing felt so much bigger. I have never had a fish i couldn't budge. A legitimate 7 minute fight without seeing the fish only to have the hook ever-so-slightly pop out. I could not bring it up, and i highly doubt it was snagged as it doesn't happen much with the pin. Man, i wish i could have at least gotten a look.

BW Trout, I have a feeling your post was hinting that you are upset that myself and others have been posting about the Brule. I understand that the Brule is a sacred fishery to many people and is not a river to be exploited. That's why when I post I don't give exact spots or areas. All anyone has done on here has given people who can't fish the river as much as I can reports to help them get through their day at work, and give people a place to start. The Brule has a lot of water and it is no secret when there are steelhead in the rivers. I also haven't noticed a rise in pressure, the quote you mocked was stating that people were concentrated in one area, the spots I actually fished had one or two cars in the lot. You have to also look at the good these forums do, I try my hardest to encourage catch and release as well as being courtious and responsible on the river, our members do a great job of promoting these values. If you want to discuss this further please e-mail me at paul0508 at d . umn . edu.

Quick, I was simply was making a point at the vastness of fishing forums, and thought it was funny that you started your report with that quote. wink.gif

"Upset" and "Mocking" was all your interpetation...

I also like how you left me out of "our members" shocked.gif

I've been involved in this forum for a long time (2000?) and have a grasp on it's ins and outs. smile.gif

I'm sorry if I assumed wrong, I guess I'm just getting used to members attacking other members in other sites when it comes to steelhead fishing. I don't know what you mean by leaving you out, I appreciatte having knowlegable guys like you on here and I just wanted to make sure there weren't any problems. If you frequent other forums I'm sure you know how fast things like this can escalate.

LOTWS, my post was a knee jerk reaction in attempts to give Quick a little guff. Everyone hates to see added pressure on a favorite fishing spot but it can't really be helped. I understand your point of view and I pretty much follow every post vigilantly of my interests. I also personally would like to see less "where is the hot bite" posts and more technical/technique posts, but this is the internet age. I assure you that you will continue to get eye candy on F.M. wink.gif
