Lake Winnipeg St. Patrick's Day greenbacks

These are some of the 'eyes a longtime buddy and I landed (and released) over the St. Patrick's day weekend on Lake Winnipeg! The top photo is that of an extremely well proportioned HAWG that measured a tad over thirty one inch's and was easily thirteen plus pounds! We (I) dropped a few that were extremely heavy. That's ok, it will just force me to go back out during the week!

Hi Paul, those lousy December ice conditions put an end to a lot of guys plans to head up this way. Then once the ice conditions were deemed good to go, water quality (clarity) became the next issue! frown.gif We were into January before the water conditions were tolerable. Although everything seemed out of kilter, we did enjoy many successful outings on the Red through January and February.

The Red is currently producing some good results at this time. However, it's March and Lake Winnipeg is simply to hot to pass up!!!

I have a couple of groups heading up this way from St. Cloud and Fargo. The weather is looking awesome with temps in the mid forties. Those huge 'eyes should have the feed-bags on "BIG TIME"! I plan to be on the lake beginning on Thursday. I told the little women that I'll be back, "sooner or later". grin.gif

Hey Scoot, The final day of the season is March 31st! Are you thinking of heading up?

I'm not sure what to make of the upcoming five day weather forecast! For tomorrow, they're calling for highs in the high thirties. But then from Thursday through Sunday they're predicting temperatures in the high fifties! crazy.gif

That should really trigger those big 'eyes into an even mnore aggressive feeding mood! grin.gif It might be time to remove the tracks from my Sportsman and install the tires....

A set of 4 small pontoons and a Yamaha T8 outboard maybe!!! This warm weather rolling in is gonna make for perfect bucket sitting this weekend. Don't forget the sunscreen!!!

BTW Stu....Nice Pik pics, and to think some folks would call them purdy Greenies an ugly Pikerel!!!

Thanks Fisky! You must have been reading that post off WW, yes, no?! Funny how some see things in such an entirely different light than others isn't it! wink.gif

By the way, you might be right about the pontoons, I wonder if they'd be available through Polaris? grin.gif

Ya man I lurk around some other sites that cater to these wonderful fisheries. Some peoples kids eh! That 'ugly' thread was just plain funny, but that other 'matlock' thread was taken just a bit too far by that one fellow and I'm surprised you did'nt fire off, but hey you are waaaay BIGGER than that. I think he's just a bit jealous!!!!

Sounds like you're in for another great weekend up your way, and your up and coming Laker trip sounds like it'll be kinda fun too....Just kinda!!!

Have a good one.

Hey Fisky, I appreciate your comments about PP and you're absolutely correct. You stated that "I'm bigger than that" and I take that as a compliment, thank you! In some ways I would have loved nothing better than to fire back! But really, what would I be accomplishing? Especially when I don't have a clue who this guy is?! confused.gif It's obvious he knows who I am......oh well, enough said. As I stated in my final reply, I don't have the time to waste.

Just curious, what region of Minnesota do you call home?

Born in Roseau, live in Roseau. Dad is from here and my mums a frost-back Canadian citizen from East Kildonan though so I'm rather lucky!!! Got family there in Winnepeg still, some in Gimli, amd some in Steinbach too. Spent alot of my childhood summer weekends 'cottageing' at my aunt and uncles place at Victoria beach. I've done a bit of fishin just out from their place there too over the years. Once I got a little older Grand Beach was the place to be though....just for the abundant 'scenery' ya know!

My mum actually swam accross the narrows of lake Winnepeg when she was a young lady. She tells me she was the first woman to do so.

Hate to tell you this but some of my Gimli relatives worked the fishery for quite awhile too. That goes back many years though and they've long since hung up the nets.

Stu,

There's no chance for me this coming weekend, but there's an off chance for the weekend after (come up Thurs night and come back Sun morning). If it materializes, I'll be calling.

Stu,

Those are some great looking walleyes! To bad we weren't able to come up there this past weekend. We are kicking ourselves, but the health of my buddies dad was borderline so we cancelled. He is doing better and actually home from the hospital- great news considering what we had heard the week before.

We are going to talk about coming up next year.....we'll keep you posted in the future.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
