riverrat56
ya bullheads can be used for bait but they must be under 7 inches, also they work great for cats, better than chubs because they move around more, use them live but break off the spines with a pliers so the cats will bite harder and longer. i usually hook mine through the tail section behind the fin. Dirk W
Bullheads are really a flathead only bait. 5-7 inches are best. You would be much better served using cut up chunks of sucker or chub if channel cats are your target.
Flashman
Not exactly true; Yes, the bigger bullheads make great flathead bait, but I've also caught some nice channels on the smaller (5") bullheads too. In fact I catch mostly channels on the smaller bullheads that I use but when I target channels I prefer to use cutbait myself. I don't want to step on anyones toes but just want to let you know that channels will eat a little bully.
riverrat56
i use a 1oz egg sinker about 18 in above the hook and then i peg it with a split shot or tie a leader and a swivle, this is if i am fishing slack water or slow moving water with few snags. in a heavier current or snag infested water i will use a 2 oz no-roll style sinker about a foot up the line from the hook. for hook sizes i use 5/0 eagle claw bleeding bait hooks. rushing
Yes bullheads are mainly a flathead bait but I have caught big channels, some walleyes and a sheephead using them while flathead fishing.rob
DARK30
Anybody ever use cut bullhead? I myself have not, but I would think it would be a good option.------------------cast,cast,cast,cast......
icehousebob
Hey Dark, my sons and I fish Channnels on the Crow quite a bit and use cut up Bullheads all the time. They're really tough and hard for Cats to pull off the hook. I like to use chunks of them on 6/0 circle hooks.
cattin_addict
I use bullies at cutbait and seems to work really good, my preferred is sucker, just depends what i have on hand...cattin_addict
Dennis Steele
I don't care for bullheads as cut bait. You will catch some cats on the bullies, but I usually find that the other oily cut baits work much better.Live baiting for channels with smaller bullies (under 5")does work and you typically get larger channels with them. But again I usually have better luck with large hunks of cut baits. Perch Jerker
I've had FAR better success using anything but cut bullies as bait. I've tried them side by side with other cut bait (suckers, shiners, etc) and they always loose big time. Just my experience,PJ
rushing
One good possible thing about bullheads is that you can fish them as live cut bait. You can slice open their bellies and they stay alive for quite awhile.rob
Ed Carlson
It is not too well known, but the bigger channels also gobble up dem dar bullheads...dead or alive. In fact..walleye do too, they mostly eat bullies 5" or less and or stonecats of any size given the chance to do so...especially on/in rivers.Cut Bullhead both fresh and sour is a fair to good channel cat bait if they are in the mood for Red Meat. ------------------Ed "Backwater Eddy" CarlsonBackwater Guiding"ED on the RED"[email protected]><,sUMo,>
