On your reel that is. I have a corsair 400 spooled with a dacron, Tuf Line I believe. I've been thinking about going to a mono or superline. I like the dacron, but would like suggestions on the other two. I actually like the stretch of mono, but obviously the larger diameter you go, the more it drives you to drink (likely excuse).

I'm assuming your talking flatheads here? Once you get past 40-50lb mono, your right, it gets hard to work with. Even with 40lb mono you need a large capacity reel to handle it.

Try some 80lb Power Pro if you get a chance. It has the diameter of about 17lb mono and can obviously handle any flathead around. It is easy to work with, sensitive, and once on your spool will last you a couple seasons.

I use 50 lb. power pro mostly. for my flathead rods and 20 lb on my channel rods.

When I first went to superlines ...way back when.....I didn't realize that I needed to use different knots and that alone drove me to drink. (there, thats my excuse smile.gif )

I like Power Pro to. That caught me a nice 38" flatty and was on the spool for two years when I caught it. Nope I didn't take it off then respool it on backwards so its fresh either.

It maybe pretty visible but its strong and holds knots real well. I may even keep it on for another year. We'll see though..

80lb Tuff-Line
65lb Tuff-Line
25lb Mono
20lb Fireline
30lb Berkley Cat (high viz green)

I'm getting all my stuff set for the summer and counted 11 rod/reel combos in the stable. For reels I've got large 2 spin-cast (one is an Okuma and the other ??), 4 Abu-Garcia 6500's, 2 Abu-Garcia 5500's, 3 level-wind reels (2 Penn 209's and a ??). For rods it's mainly St. Croix with an Ugly-Stik Cat, King Kat, Big Fish, Reflex, Berkley Lightning Muskie, and a couple of 'downrigger' specials.

Personally the 80lb Tuff-Line spooled by Th0rne Br0s is my favorite.

My first heavy cat rig I got from Dan Gapen. One of the Gapen 7 1/2 rods, a Corsair spooled with Greenspot Dacron...nice rig! Then I picked up an E-Cat and a Penn 320GT2 spooled with 65 Power Pro to go on it...nice rig also! Now I think I want one of Moyer's new rods with an Abu 7000 spooled with 30 lb Big Game...sounds nice!

June is coming boys!

Hey Dirk, Nice job in the new Catfish Guide! I just got mine...Gotta love that cover photo too!

I've got 3 rigs now but working on the 4th. 8ft King Cat with an Okuma Epixor Bait Runner spooled with 65lb Tuff line XP. 9ft ?? with a Big Diawa also spooled with the 65lb Tuff line and a 7ft fiberglass rod for Channels with 35lb Tuff line. I've got an 8ft casting rod that I just can't decide what to put on for a reel....more than likely a 6500. After next weekend I'll have the boat down here and I'll be off the bank and on the water. I can't wait.

Running 65-80 lb power pro, great line... You can even pull the ol' jon boat up river with it!

Kinda sucks to try to break it off when you get snagged though.

Stren has a new Ultra Hi-Vis line out that is very cool. I tested it last weekend and man that stuff is easy to see day or night. Phlorestent too, it will look like 3/4 rope under a black light.

Casts well, knots hold, high abraision resistance, spools up very nice on baitcasters.

Kewl stuff.
