Got SICK from watching hunting shows

Guess what I saw last night? T/Cs Game Trails! Overall the footage was great, but the commentary was a flip flop of last week. This time, Wadell is talking about the long shots you get in Texas and how he was glad he had his T/C Encore so he could reach out there with that 250 yrd reticle - sure is like archery hunting with a gun!

I agree 100% with what everybody is saying. Its pretty easy to get jaded watching these shows when everybody is shooting a monster buck or the mallards are dropping right into them. They don't show the effort most of us go through to have those few fleeting moments.

I had an experience this fall after deer season.

I like to watch some (but not all) of these shows on Men's Outdoors and other stations, and my 10 year old son likes to watch them too. After not seeing a thing this year, he asks me how many I shot. I said that actually, I haven't seen a deer in 3 years. He replied that the guys on TV always get one and that I must be doing something wrong.

Are these shows telling beginning hunters/fishermen that success is expected everytime, and no fish or deer is a failure?

Last fall some buddys and I were hunting a small duck pond by my house. The morning was cold and ice lined the shore. We were cold and hadn't seen much when all of a sudden about 20 geese came honking in from the east. We sat there quiet and still in our little duck blind awaiting there arrival. One of the guys said to keep our heads and eyes down. We did. I managed to sneak a peek under the brim of my hat and I think I might have seen the most beautiful sight I have ever saw. There right under the brim of my hat I could see at least a dozen geese with wings set to land in our mallard decoys .The brim of my hat framed it all. I remember thinking,"You sure don't get views like this watching a hunting show". It was at that time that I thought ,It doesn't matter if we get any of these geese or not, this is perfect no matter what. we got three out of 15. I won't say as to why but the point of my story is, if I were makeing a hunting show I think I would leave out all the missing and swearing if you know what I mean. I think the reason old Tred Barta is so popular is because he dosen't leave these things out.I think all the other guys still have these moments. They just choose to leave them out of the final cut. grin.gif

I agree with most who say it is cheap entertainment. Fleet Farm sells hunting and fishing video tapes (VHS) for 5 bucks that last 90 minutes. Can you beat the fun for that price? When it is cold, rainy, bad butt ugly out there...why not! I tell my son who loves watching them with me that it's not really the same where we hunt...we work very hard for the game we shoot. But its ok to dream!

Hey guys.

I agree with you all 100%!!! I didn't think I'd ever get sick and tired of hunting shows, but come on!! I can't stand Cindy Garrison!! Hot but I can't stand her!! I've been talking to a bunch of my buddies and we are thinking of taping some of our outings!! Not that we harvest the biggest or most animals. I would rather watch my old hunts 5 years from now than what's on TV. Has anyone else thought of this!! We've had some pretty awesome moments that I would love to have on tape!! From guys falling out of duck boats to guys unloading thier guns without pulling the trigger!! How classic would it be to have a guy get buck fever. Have the shakes, shot in the air, or what ever it might be on tape!! Them are the things worth watching!!

Yep, we've tinkered with the video cam and have a turkey and bow deer hunt - its tough to find someone to work the cam when its rut time and people have tags left!

Last night Jimmy H was trying to hide from me in full camo but I quickly ID'd him and turned the channel!

I'm gonna ad Wally D's show to the 'Can't Stand to Watch' list. Also, Roger Raglin joins the list. Anything shot on the Milk R with 100+ deer in a field joins the list as well, most Texas hunts get a no vote as well.

Guess I'm getting ornery in my old age! blush.gif

Who is Wally D? I am drawing a blank on that 1.

I like Eastmans, they hunt primarily on public ground in Wyoming, and also the father son team, can't think of the show, but they hunt mostly old school and aren't about the trophy as much as they are about the hunt, they hunt mostly archery without a ton of editing.

Wally D would be Wally Dallenback(sp?) the ex-Nascar driver. Are you referring to the Fitzgerald's (father-son team)? Some of their/his(Dan's) older archery videos are top notch, old school for sure and like said the trophy factor is not important there.

I also agree with you guys. I used to watch whitetail revolutions and must have seen the same clip you are talking about with Ron Spomer talking about the blaze orange issue. The guy is out of touch with reality. His views are a joke most of the time. As for fenced hunts I saw a show one time where a ranch owner had spotted a huge buck and gave good ol bill jordan a call. Well needless to say by the end of the show he shot the monster. I always ask myself how can they be so proud of taking a deer in this manner. Get out in the wild and actually hunt!

Yeah that's the one. Fitzgerald.... Love those guys!!! You put some of these other guys on the land that most of us hunt and they would be lost....But the majority of the audience wants to see big deer getting killed, not small ones. You also have to think that most of these shows are company promotional or have sponsers that want people to think that with their products in your hand, you too can kill BC bucks every time out!
