schweady
sparky: What I should have said was, "According to the list of lakes posted on their HSOforum, and in the booklet I picked up from a bait shop last fall, E Rush, W Rush, and Coon were shown as HD lakes on the 2006 chip from Navionics." The 2006 list I grabbed off the web and the booklet show the names of these three lakes in red print, meaning Navioncs HD. The old web page list also has designations that are quite different for many other lakes from the list now posted for the 2007 chip, so I know it was the lake list for the 2006 chip. So, I looked up Coon Lake on my ExpeditionC, and with my 2006 Navionics chip installed it looked a 'regular' map (5 foot increments) UNTIL I zoomed in to at least the 1/4nm level. Then it showed in 1 foot intervals. Same for East and West Rush. The LakeMaster chip shows just 5 foot intervals no matter the zoom level. (Took a while for me to find the lakes, too: with the Navionics chip installed there's no Coon Lake, East Rush Lake, or West Rush Lake in the 'Find' list, and with the LakeMaster chip installed there are 13 Coon Lakes and 24 Rush Lakes to wade through... This is an area where both manufacturers could make some improvement... Maybe Find 'By County' in addition to the 'Nearest' and 'By Name'?) I could use a second gps unit... I'm wearing out my chips swapping back and forth to compare them...
hitthebricks
You guys with the 06 card may be able to answer my question here, which is, what kind of definition does it have for Namaken, or is that a new map for the 07 card? I'm currently using the Navionics region 10 and expect I'll find a big improvement. HTB
schweady
Namakan is 5 foot contours, '06 and '07.
sparkyaber
I finally got off my lazy b-hind and checked my mapcreate software for my garmin. Not even in the same ballpark as the chips from navionics. My software has lakes from the canadian border all the way to mexico. It is called Map Source U.S. Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots version 5.0. I don't think it really has any thing to do with navionics. I really wish I would have looked at that sooner. It would have explained a few things.

ib_jigged
Sounds like a great chip, but would be even better if it had Upper Red Lake. Why not this popular hot spot for winter ice fishing???????????
schweady
Here's my first stab at one way to compare the 2006 and 2007 Navionics HotMaps Premium chips, looking only at the Navionics HD and LakeMaster Pro lakes in Minnesota contained on those two Navionics chips. Maybe Jeff can help me clean it up, but I think I'm close. For instance: some oddities remain, like the Round Lake/North Round Lake and Gull Lake/Upper Gull Lake designations. And the curious apparent "downgrading" of Lake Independence, Leech Lake, Mille Lacs Lake, and White Bear Lake. (Typos on the navionics HSOforum, maybe??) This list shows just a small portion of the lakes on this chip, and it's for only one of the states that's on it. There is an incredible amount of additional data packed on this little chip! Seeing all that's on there while sorting through it all and trying to maintain some sense of sanity while looking it over has convinced me that there is good reason to get my hands on this upgrade somehow, ASAP!! schweady
Scott: There are an amazing 142 Becker County lakes and 112 OtterTail County lakes mapped on the 2007 Navionics chip, it's just that none of them are HD.
DEADhead
Quote: There are an amazing 142 Becker County lakes and 112 OtterTail County lakes mapped on the 2007 Navionics chip, it's just that none of them are HD. According to DNR lakefinder, there are 239 lakes in Becker County and 314 in Otter Tail County that have profiles and/or lake maps. So Navionics has about half of the lakes for those counties.I agree with Scott that there could be more emphasis placed on Becker Co. lakes. However, having these lakes in HD may draw more anglers and bigger crowds to my home waters, which isn't always favorable...

zachp
I bought the H20c and navionics 06 chip for a combo on dec. 29th and was told i had 30 days to send in the $50 rebate form to navionics, so Jan. 16 comes and i look on navionics site and couldn't find a rebate form, i emailed navionics and was told I was too late for the rebate and that was that, i guess it's my own fault for not looking on the site earlier, it just kinda sucks that i was misled by the store in the first place. slotlimit
Hey Jeff, Great Product! I have the 2005 edition and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I do a lot of fishing in MN and SD so NAvionics is the card for me. But I guess I'll have to wait for 2008 (hint hint) to update so the card will have Green Lake in Kandiyohi County as a HD Map. Thanks for the products.
Like2Fish
Jeff I have a question in regards to the maps for LOTW and Rainy Lake. From the post I'm replying to you stated that "On the Navionics chart, you will get the entire LOTW system based on the official Govt. charts (US and Canada). Also, about 5000 additional lakes (Many in HD 1' contours), Rainy, massive Great Lakes coverage, yadayadayada." I have used the paper Canadian Hydrographic Maps for years for both LOTW and Rainy Lake. When you say LOTW data is based on the official Government charts does that imply that the chip data is identical to the paper Canadian Hydrographic Maps for both LOTW and Rainy Lake? I apologize for a dumb question. I don't know if the Canadian Hydro maps are the official government maps. Thanks for your help. Like2Fish

fisherdog19
Jeff, I have a local store that has the premium north chips that are date stamped Dec 06. We could not tell anywhere if they were 06 chips, or 07 chips produced in late 06. Could you shed some light?
schweady
I just picked up the 2007 Navionics chip on Sunday, and I'm waiting to see if my buddy at work wants to buy my 2006 chip or if I am just going to mail it in for the rebate. Folks who do trade up should know that the fine print on the rebate prepaid mailer requires you to mail in the old chip within 30 days of your new chip purchase. How do you tell the difference in the store? My 2006 Navionics chip is 512MB and labeled "HotMaps Premium North SD/PREM-N2 Apr2006." My 2007 Navionics chip is 1GB and labeled "HotMaps Premium North SD/PREM-N3 V01.18." Also, if you can put it into a gps unit while you're there, peek under Menu > Map Choice... > Navionics Map Choice. The 2006 chip provides 10 choices, all ending with '61.nv2' and the 2007 chip offers 17 choices, all ending with '71.nv2.' (MN is now split up into 5 areas - Nw, N, Ne, Sw, Se. On the old one, it was just 3 areas - Nw, Ne, S.)
