Just got back from the river. Rick brought a whole palefull of bullheads for bait so I figured I'd just save my Suckers. Well, I have a new respect for the Bullhead used as Flathead bait....Rick got 4 from 5-15 lbs and I got two...a 15 and a whopper 46lb Yellow one at 2:30 this morning.

Thanks for coming Rick!

Ata boy Dark and Rick, that must have been a good tug on da old pole...Huh.

Dark30 are you setting them Bullheads on bottom, or up off the bottom on your "Wine-O-Rig"?

Have you seen the new Gamakatsu Big River Hook yet, very cool. A serious big game good for large baits. I think they would hang them big flatys very well. Right now they come in 10 O/T, I am working on them adding 7 & 8 O/T's next.

The new stingers are hot too. We will see a lot of new uses for them in days to come.

Walleye, finding a big school like that wouldn't actually be that hard! Whenevre I fish lake nokomis, (although im sure it's on other lakes as well) These big clouds of bullheads come right up to the surface. They are sized perfectley for bait too!

It was a very good night. The river gods were certainly smiling on us last night.

Kevin told me I had to bring bait, so of course I went out to the CR dam and proceeded to catch about 3 dozen bullheads in about 30 minutes. Just a simple jig and bobber set-up with corn as bait.

Of course I was relating to Dennis and I knew Dennis would be very happy to see those bullheads (of course I've become I big believer in them as well) and that he'd ask me where I got them so he get get after them as well. I figured Dark30 would be just as happy.

Anyway, I get to Dark30's place. He looks at what I have and promptly says, "Rick, you can use those bullheads, I'll be using my chubs and suckers." That was fine by me, but I sure expected to see at least a little enthusiasm with my bait offering.

We get to the River and of course I'm using bullheads and Dark30 is using his bait. I popped 3 quick flatties (ok it took a bit, but it seemd quick to me at the time). Dark hadn't even had a nible.

He finally gives in and switches to a bullhead and promptly pops a 15 lb flathead. Shortly after that I popped a decent one.

It's getting kind of late and then Kevin's bullhead rigged rod starts screaming. It finally stops before it spools him and he sets the hook. He starts pumping the rod, gains a little line back, and out screams his drag.

This is no little fish and Kevin is as excited as a kid in the candy aisle. 4 times he gets it close only to have this bruiser scream the drag back out to deeper water. Finally I net it and it is extremely wide. I'm thinking 50 plus pounds. Unfortunately the length wasn't there. Only 42 inches.

We weigh her and she comes in at over 46 lbs (the digital scale kept bouncing betwen 46 and 47 and it was getting difficult for Dark to hold her up and keep her still. In the best interests of the catfish, we decide to call it 46 and let her go.

I have to give a big thank you to Dark30. It was a very good night and enjoyable company. If you ever get a chance to get out and fish with Dark, I recommend him highly. I also want to say thank you to your wife again for an excellent meal and for being a great hostess as well.

I believe we also have a bullhead convert now as well. We may have to call Dark30 Bullhead30 from now on grin.gif

Good thing we left a dozen or so in his bait keeping system. I have a feeling he'll need them before a week goes by.

Thanks again and YES, the flatties are biting.

I think I may have posted it on the recipes forum?

Basicly you fillet the Bullheads out like a catfish, leave the skin on.

Then ya toss them in a Terriakie brew to maranade overnight.

Flop them fillets on a smoker or grill with some apple chips at full smoke, skin side down. They don't take long to smoke/cook so try to slow it down a bit.

If the straight Terriakie maranade is a bit strong for your taste, add 1/3 100% pure apple juice or cider to the maranade. I like the apple flavor, the acids help to brine it up overnight too.

You can get them long toothpick thingys that the Chineses use for cooking and ribbon the fillets on them before smoking. Be sure to leave the skin on or it will fall apart.

A Tasty snack that Bullheadiakie on a stick...Yup-Yup..Nummmmy!

Yup, I'm guna work on a Carp Cassarolie next Eh.
