Whats your first choice? Would you rather catch Flatheads or Channels? And lets say they would be big ones!

I have to go with the Flathead.

WET NETS!...BIG ONES!

Dark30; I enjoy fishing for Flatheads first but catch more channels. Go figure! I've been trying for some channels in the DesMoines River the last two days and have not caught anything but it is fun just being there. maybe I'll run down to telcot dam and try it tomorrow. I know the water temp is not right for open water but I've just got to try.

Okay, I'll be the first to go with channels. I haven't had the pleasure of landing a really nice flathead yet, but I've had dozens of great channel cat fishing trips. The greatest thing about channel cats is that they are so darn aggresive at almost any time of the day. I just love pullin' up on a really hot lookin' snag, lobbing out that first hunk of sucker minnow, and seeing that first rod double over like it's being pulled by a Rottweiler!
Maybe my luck will change for flatheads this summer, and I'll change my tune. Until then I'll catch piles of big channels while I'm patiently waiting for my clicker reel to sing with the weight of a flathead.

Boar,
We spanked em' out on sixteen again on Sunday morning. It was good to meet up with you too. Nice weekend on the lake. We had one line left to pull up on Sunday morn. and Peter nailed a 22 inch eye on it!
Pool of spittle - you are funny! Hope you can make it down for some cat hunting this summer.

Good job for pete, stories like that make me kike myself for not buying that trailer up there last year, we ran into fog so thick that eldy had'nt been through in 25 yrs, long ride home. I'm looking at early sept. If not then middle to late july to sink some heavy grey material attached to some fibrous thread thats connected to a stout stick like appendage with a sharp metal protrusion used to hold that night's sacrafice in hopes to intice a large aqua dwelling speices to feed, with ya. Later Boar

Well I am torn.I don't think I can actully say I prefer one over the other.
Channels are a blast becuase you can get numbers of them and I would have to say that if a channel and a flat of the same size were to fight the channel would kick big but.BUT I do love sitting in my boat listeng to the music that the skeeters make and waiting for the sound of the clicker going off and fightin a big cat untill you see this large dark yellow monster come from the depths.Hey its all good to me.Why the heck would you want to chose one over the other when you can have both! smile.gif

I don't have a favorite either, they are both a lot of fun. It's usually a matter of day or night for me. If I'm out during the day I fish channels & it's more of a run & gun style of fishing. After dark I switch to flatheads because it's hard to pass up the chance at getting some monster fish. I'm glad we have both in the metro. Vern

Ok, I guess if you have a River Pro you have much more of a chance catching both state records. Maybe you could even get the record Blue too. pray.gif

Channels defiantly. Easier to catch, taste great, and won't break your wallet for bait and riggings.

Then again I've only caught one flathead in my life.. an itty baby that weighed about 2lbs.

Same goes for the Northern VS Muskie debate. I generally go for the fish that's easiest to catch, with the less amount of monetary hurtage.

Though I wouldn't mind hooking into a big flat, muskie, or Sturgeon by accident grin.gif

I think that I would have to say that it depends on what kind of mood i am in. Channels would be my favorite just because you catch so many of them but its still fun to get a nice big flathead pulling out drag on a sandbar at 2 in the morning on a summer night. Oh what the heck i might as well say they are both my favorite.><>

It's gotta be the flathead. something about rivers at night, small campfires, and these ellusive critters that come out to play at night.....

the only time I am really targetting channels is when Im out scouting new water and am running and gunning to get an idea of fish activity around certain snags. Other than that and in the mornings going back to the landing, the time is all spent for the flathead the size of a picnic table. smile.gif

My favorite lake is stocked with channels. I know the lake like the back of my hand and I can catch fish there anytime. So I would have to say I like channel kitties. They taste better and are safer to eat than some caught in rivers. but I still love the pull of a monster flathead......good question.

Nothing will beat a * Good * night of flathead fishing .. when fish are active and it seems you can do nothing wrong. Theres nothing like the feeling of your forearms pulsing with pain as if you were fraiming houses all day, and not sure if you should put your line back in, or give it a rest ...

I guess I'm a die-hard flathead man ... but I spend a nearly equal amount of time chasing channels in areas where flatheads are present, or the channels have potential to be of a respectable size.

The more I think about it, I dont think there is a *right* answer to the question at hand. I might be guilty of changing my story after a couple good nights of C-cat fishing.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
