Fish House Dogs

I have a hyper, 2-year-old GSP. I'm thinking about taking her fishing in the perm house. I may need to mount an eye bolt and tie her to a spot so she won't walk around messing up my lines.

If it works, I'd like to have the company and my wife would like me to take the dog (i.e. I can probably add a day to my trips).

Do you guys have any tips? Who has an ice house dog out there?

I do not know how it will work with your dog, my brother brings his lab with, and he is in a portable (flip over). He brings a couple of blankets and has him lay down in the sled. "Buddy" usually listens and stays in one spot. He will give him a treat, but, usually he lays there curious. Always looking for a willing hand to pet him. He loves to run around outside, but, he stays close by.

I would say a blanket and give a little space to walk around. Bone to chew on?

On a side note I love to play with dogs while on the ice since I do not own one. I do not mind if they visit now and then either. Just as long as they do not show aggression, barking is not preferred, however, tolerable.

I understand the hyper GSP thing as I have a super duper hyper 2 year old GSP mix.

I'd say exercise the dump outta him on the way out to the lake. Make him run, pull the sled, tie him to the wheeler and go for a spin, [PoorWordUsage] the dude out.

In the house have bones and stuff to occupy him.

I have a new Airedale and plan on taking him with me quite a bit. Had him in the boat a few times this fall already and just made sure to take him on a long walk/throw the ball a few times to wear him out. Laid down for a nap and slept most of the time while we were out. What does everyone do for lodging on an overnight trip with the portables? Dog friendly motels? Leave them in the truck/SUV?

have to go with the "get'em tired" bit. I have a GSP as well and it takes quite a bit to get them tired.

But I had him with me last year when he was only a couple months old and he wasnt too bad. Not sure how this year will go, hes twice as big and probably twice as roudy.

However I dont have any problems with him in the boat so I think he should do ok in the ice house.

As mentioned just get them tired before hand.

Im am predicting many days this winter starting the day off with a pheasant hunt at around 10am, hunt til afternoon or so and then hit the ice for some walleyes and then head home sometime around dark... Man South Dakota is great!

I have an older golden lab that I took out with the portable a few times last year. He did is usual run around in a big circle on the walk out and check out the area, but once the intial excitement was over he was on his blanket chewing on the rawhide. Dogs are nice fishing partners, they don't talk too much and they don't whine about not catching fish.

I used to take my Basset Hound out with me a few years ago.Until she got to old to handle the cold for to long.(she passed away a few weeks ago) She used to love it. I would let her run around on the ice for a little while then would take her in the shack and have her lay down on a dog pillow to keep her off the ice. As long as I let her sniff the Fish she was happy. I hope to talk my wife into getting another dog someday, because they do make excellent fishing partners.

Took my 9 month old pug out quite a bit last Winter. He loved to fish and visit almost more than me! Tried to fish lakes that were a little less populated so he could run and scout and with the nice weather I could set up the Otter as a wind break and keep an eye on him. Most times it was a very enjoyable experience. Sometimes he took more than his share of the snacks. shocked.gif

Hey Grand Dad congrats. I've got 2 newfies (1 old and slow, 1 young and not real bright) neither likes to be inside during winter. Nothing like looking out and seeing just a nose as the rest is buried in the snow. Great tip on the rattle reels. Will give that a try in the new house.
