Tacoma or Tundra?

I will be buying a new truck in the spring and I'm starting to do some research. I'm pretty sure I will go with yoda. Just trying to decide between theses two models. A 6cl tacoma or the 8cl tundra. Anyone know what the honest mpg are on these trucks? The biggest boat I tow is a 20ft startcraft island. Would like to hear some good and bad stuff on these trucks. Thanks guys

I think the new tundra will be out by then. You'll be the first to own one if you buy it so you'll have to let us know. My '06 tundra 4 door SR5 gets 15-17 in town or towing the '81 18ft lund down the freeway. I honestly have not driven it on the freeway for any extended length of time without the boat so I have no idea what it does get on the freeway.

I had a 95 tacoma with the 2.7 litre manuel trans. I could get 20 to 22 on the freeway easily. Around 18 in the city. I sold it to a guy I work with And he complains that he can only get 18 on the freeway and he was lucky to get 14-15 in the city. I told him to change his driving habbits for a tank, he did and he hasn't complained again. (he still drives like an (Contact Us Please)! Full throttle right to the stop and slam on the brakes)

I get about 17 mpg city/highway with my 2005 Tundra, about 14 mpg towing the boat a couple weekends ago, but I battled a headwind both ways. And my last tankfull was about 1/3 towing the boat (16.5ft 60 hp) and 2/3 city/highway driving and I got 16 mpg.

Like Aijer said, the new 2007 Tundra will have a 5.7 liter V-8 with over 300 hp, and a whole new body style with more room, and more options.So if you decide on that you'll have to let us know!My 1997 Tacoma 4x4 Extra Cab has a 3.4 liter V-6 with auto tranny and gets 19-22 Highway, and 16-18 pulling a 99 Pro-V with 50 hp Yamaha motor.I have worked this truck many times and it takes it in stride!

With that big of a boat, get a V-8.

You might be able to pull it with a V-6, but you'll suck more fuel as you struggle. Plus, as the engine gets older, issues with wear, over heating, etc will become more evident as you stress the engine.

The V-8 will have higher resale. (or not, if gas goes to $13.25 a gallon)

My experience with V-6 trucks; they get very little to no increased milage compared to a properly geared and fuel injected V-8 to make it worth it.

I would have to agree with jigsticker. I had a V6 toy just b/4 the tacoma and would only get 18-19 mpg and less with the 18' pro-v. Towing made the truck work hard and it was not easy to pass when you needed to. My tundra gets 18 mpg w/o boat and 13 with boat. It is very easy to pass with the tundra. The small amount better gas mileage is not worth it for me. I will go with a tundra when my current one goes, but with only 160k miles on it I will have to wait a few more years.

The newer Tacoma's with the 4.0 V-6 have 245 hp if I remember right.The 3.4 has 190 hp, and the newer 4.7 V-8 has around 280 hp.I have not driven a 4.0 liter Tacoma, but after driving my 3.4 liter I would think the 4.0 would pull pretty effortlessly on your average 16-18 ft boat.

Ran make sure you get a 8. My truck has the small 4.6 V-* and I wish I had more power when Im hauling on long trips. Its ok most of the time but up long hills and passing it gets tricky some times.

Jarod has the Chev Z-71 I think and he says it has more power than the Fords or Dodge he had. Something to think about. No matter what get the ful towing package. Oh and a topper or T-cover like mine. So nice to be waterproof and lockable. Plus it may save ya some gas.
