Light in Boat?

Im looking at buying a lantern for night fishing in my boat. The ones that run on batteries don't light up enough and not sure if propane would be a good idea due to the hot glass. Anybody got any good ideas or products for fishing at night.

I have a battery coleman. Runs on 4 D's. Has a remote on off, works slick for me. PLenty bright when out after dark. I hesitate to bring my propane on board. I tend to kick things over and that is just a fire waiting to happen, for me anyway.

I have used a 12 volt 50w bulb for a stern light in the past, all you need is a fixture (something to screw the bulb into..trouble lite, pig tail, etc) and wire it up to your 12 v bat.

lites up most of the boat and draws in most of the bugs too

I've found the small battery operated "headlight" work pretty good for night fishing.

My current inexpensive favorite is one marketed by Ray-O-Vac for about $12 at Wally, Fleet Farm, etc.

It takes three AAA batteries and has a white/bluish LED, a couple of red LEDs, and a small flashlight bulb with adjustable beam pattern. You just select the lighting option with a twist of the end cap. The batteries last quite a while using the LEDs, but the flashlight bulb does take a toll. However, it's not really necessary to use the bulb very often.

Yep, the headlamp or Cat's Eyes for the brim of your cap are the way to go.

I use rope lighting two strands running on each side of the boat...interior of course. , These lights are ran off the starter battery, I leave a jump box in the boat just in case(have not had to use it yet). I should mention that I have only use the lights when needed to rebait..etc...

Two different ideas for you, both from ice fishing. One is a clip on light that runs off a 12v that has a lighter attachment for it and a switch, works good in the fish house, got it at the ice fishing show. I saw it on a different HSOforum too. Its pretty weather tight too. The other is the 54 LED back-up light I have in my fish house that runs off a vexilar battery. The lights a little on the spendy side, but they last for like 18 hours on a vexilar battery. If you watch HSOList you can find them at a decent price. There was a guy who posts on here named CaptKev that was selling them last year. I'll let you know if I find that other web site.

Edit: The HSOforum I found the clip on light at in the past says they no longer carry the item. Do a search on the net for 12v trouble lights, this should bring up a few options. Good luck.

One difficulty about nighttime lights in the boat is making sure the light isn't going to shine in your eyes. You'll become blind outside the light. In my previous Rebel I bought a cargo light that came with a switch. The rod locker on my rebel was not fully enclosed and there was a bench or shelf above the rods. This created a great place to mount this cargo light. I fastened it under the shelf and when I turned it on, the entire interior of the boat was lit up well enough I could tie on lures but the light was blocked from shining in my eyes. Worked great.

auto parts stores sell license plate lights that are 1/2 covered with a metal piece that works pretty good for not blinding you and they are almost flush mount

no problem another good thing is that they are 1/2 the price of regular marine boat lights that are way too bright and shine in your eyes I think I paid $5.00 for my mine

I use one 6' strand under each gunnel. Works great if I ever turn them on. My headlight is normally enough and the spotlight works great to keep me from smacking the shore and reefs.
