Giant Pike Pic - The Real Story

As I mentioned when the pics of the giant 'Rainy Lake' pike first started making the rounds, I had sent off an email to my friend Jan Eggers (AKA 'The Pike Ferret') in Holland to see if he knew the story behind the fish... As usual, he did. Here's what Jan had to say about the fish...

"This pike was caught on the 6th of March 2006 by Dutch fisherman Ewout Blom in a pretty big lake in the south of Holland, I know the name of the lake from where quite a number of 40 plus pikes were caught and released but promised not to mention the name to avoid too heavy fishing pressure.

"This pike had a length of 127 cm and a weight of 19,5 kilo and was caught trolling with a Rapala Super Shad Rap in perch colour and I have about 10 original digital pictures of this fish"

For the metric-impaired (such as yours truly), 127cm and 19.4 kilos works out to right around 50 inches, and just barely shy of 43 pounds...

So, not 50 pounds, NOT Rainy Lake...

Thanks for the scoop on this, RK. I was sure that people were right when they called talk on Rainy Lake, but didn't know where it came from. Baltic Sea seemed to be a popular guess, but apparently not. Any way you slice it, though, that's one big old pike!

Good work RK! There was alot of curiousity and disbelief on different levels on this site for that post I made.... I'm glad you did your homework and put the debate to rest. Now lets see some more of those pictures.

Well given the info came from Rob Kimm, that is as reliable as it gets as far as I'm concerned. No question in my mind that Rob is telling the truth.

Eggers is like the Babe Ruth of European pike angling.

No doubt, I get that photo in a email about once a day. It is about as bad as the sturgeon photo that was floating around that came out of the "Rainy".

Trouthunter - No worries man Nothing wrong with being skeptical...'specially on the 'net...

Yeah, like Baldy and a couple others have said, if it has to do with pike, Jan Eggers will have the story likely as not. He's really an amazing guy. Pretty much lives for pike fishing, and writes about them in 5 languages... I've seen some of his collection of pike photos (he calls it his 'pike porn'). It's absolutely mind boggling.

Apparently Jan knows Ewout personally (cjac - I had the same reaction when I saw the guy's name - who could make that up?) as they're both from Holland and Ewout's a pretty hardcore pike angler so they sort of run in the same crowd. I do know Jan is using the rest of the photos of this fish in a book he has coming up so he wasn't willing to let any more photos out just yet - I already asked
