Steering wheel pulls to the right

Scoot

Question

I just bought a used 1999 Skeeter 1775 with a 2000 Vmax 150 on it. If I'm clipping along at a good speed and remove my hands from the steering wheel, it turns hard to the right. I know about the adjustment for steering on the motor- it's turned so the back of the adjustment (little fin doohicky) is all the way to the right (as you look at it from the back facing the boat/motor). As I see it, this is the correct adjustment for the problem I'm having and I can't adjust it any further. Am I correct?

Also, if I'm correct and I can't adjust it any further, what else can I do to fix this problem?

Thanks,

Put the little doohicky in the center (straight looking at the outboard from the back) and try it again. If it pulls to the right again turn the little doohicky to the left a bit until it neutralizes. The engine will pull one way or the other depending on the rpms and engine trim also. It is nice if you can play with the adjustment long enough to get it so it doesn't pull either way at your preferred rpms and trim. I don't know how much time you are willing to spend doing this adjustment. I bought a new outboard this spring and it doesn't have the trim tab on it. Good luck with the new toy. smile.gif

Scoot - are you trimming the motor up and out of the water once you're on plane? If not start doing so and you should notice the torque go away. If you're already doing that then adjust your trim tab as explained above.

If adjusting the trim tab isn't enough you might be after a torque tab... which is pop rivited on the skeg of the motor and makes a dramatic difference.

Typically torque tabs are only used when you're running a jack plate or a very high HP engine... I would think you'd be able to resolve your problem with adjustment though...

Torque plate did wonders on my '99 Skeeter 202C/200HP VMAX,dunno how a guy could have held the wheel straight with one hand under acceleration(mine has a hotfoot). Straightened her right out, amazing little device for under $20.00.
