Dropshot technique question

Sea Monster

Recommended Posts

Guys, I have been lurking long enough, time to participate. I will be taking the family for our annual trip to Whitefish next week. Would like to try dropshotting. My question is what weight dropshot for a depth of 12-16 feet of water? Additionally, what does a fish hit feel like, subtle or slam it?

Sea Monster- Welcome.. thanks for joining us!!!

For that depth if its not too windy probably 1.4 oz will be all you will need.. maybe less even! And a bite will feel like all other bites.. the main thing with a drop shot is.. do not set the hook.. just start reeling fast and hold pressure to the fish.

Sometimes the bite is refered to as a "yoyo" bite. The fish simply grabs your presentation and swims.......sometimes a tick, sometimes they hammer it. In my experience they tend to hammer it more when a worm is fished wacky style. We often drift a bank in 15-35' and stroll for takes. 1/4 oz to as heavy as 3/4 oz based on depth and wind. You need to stay in contact with the bottom.

Go as light as you can go and still feel your weight on the bottom, with a good rod and a low stretch line(flouracarbon) you can feel the whole setup the weight and you can feel your lure jiggling. 18 feet of water you can probably fish it almost vertical. I have some good days in Trout lake dropshotting on the whitefish chain, not big fish, but off some of the points i've had some 30-50 fish days.

Deitz, a couple of things:

1. In Minnesota a 5 oz. sinker is referred to as a decoy weight.

2. What are you doing posting at 10 am. on a saturday, afraid of the fish or...

3. We hammered the smallies on the Ottertail river this morning.

4. I found another new lake with piggies on Friday, let me know when your dates line up.

Now for drop-shotting, my rig is:

7 foot medium spinning

size 20 Quantum Energy

6/14 Fireline, with a 6 foot flurocarbon leader.

I like Owner "Mosquito" hooks in size 4 or 6 (red)

For plastics I like Berkley 4" straigh-tail finesse worms,black/chart.tail or Gulp leech.

Sinker, I use a 1/4 or 3/8 oz. bell sinker.

I use a Shimano Crucial 7' Drop shot rod with a stradic 2500 8 lb gamma. I tie on a swivel and make the leader drop shot rig about 20-24 inches total with the hook anywhere from 8-18" above the weight. I use the Gamagatsu G Lock hook size 2 and most of the time I use Robo worms but have had success with the gulp shad, senkos, and cutails. I try to use a 1/4 ounce drop shot weight and will go to 3/8 when necessary. I prefer tungsten over lead. I really like this style of fishing on blue sky high pressure conditions. Good Fishing!!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
