Well the good news is the prop is okay. I was able to get on plane and no problems experienced when running wide open.

I was on west metro lake with my Dad for fathers day. Targeted Pike, crappie, sunfish, ect.

Great day on the water with many fish caught but no bass as Dad is not a bass guy.

- Got 10 pike

- Some bull sunnies

- And found the crappies just on the break lines in the 9-11" class

* Saw some guys pulling in some pig bass in the pads with scum frogs and other top waters. Oh well no bass to add to the running total. Will be on the Mississippi on Thursday for small mouth and hope to have a 30-50 fish day and looking to break the 20" mark for smallies.

Took my Dad out on a west metro lake for Father's Day and found a nice school of bass. We caught 30 in one spot. Biggest was 18 and five or six were 17. Caught a couple on a spinner while searching, then we laid into the school with Senkos. 10-12ft on the edge of the weedline.

Snag, good call. You can never go wrong with Mr. Senko. Oh I have had a day or two when top water or spinners have been the ticket but I could only have one bait and one bait only and I had to catch a bass. I will take a senko any day

Sorry I haven't checked the site in a few days. We fished Waconia on Thursday. Very Windy!!! Had a few fish but it wasn't nearly as good as I had hoped. The wind kept us out of a handfull of spots I had intended on hitting... Oh, well thats why they call it fishing and not catching.

For me the last couple weeks have been a lot tougher. I'm averaging about 5 12-16" fish per day in the last 4 outtings so I'm working pretty hard. Nothing in less than 5 ft or water.

A couple good fish on pop-r's but mostly fishing 6-12 ft w crankbaits, flukes and jiggy worms.

Maybe I'm due this next weekend.

Good luck to all,

Thanks for the information on the Jig/Worm Dietz.

On another note: Are there any Twin City Tourney's happening during July or August? I was fishing in the Let's Events last year but our only one this year in Alex was canceled.

Thanks,

Jon

Oh well, just curious. I took a chunk out of the prop on a lake Ive heard you mention a few times and picked up some walleyes on a jig worm while bass fishing.

I fished with my dad the other day he fished bass while switched between bass and musky. We fished shallow cover/docks mostly and got 17 bass but most were around 14" only one 17" and 18" inch fish showed up. I think next time I may skip docks completely and opt for the deeper cover.

I have fished the G lake you mention and have found it to be a nice metro fishery to get my fix in. concenring bass fishing in general for the early morning or dusk you can still find the pigs by docks, shallow structure, and swimming docks. What I start to look for this time of year during the afternoons is the weed edges and the breaklines for the bigger fish. Also the slop with topwaters like a weedless frog or of senko's will produce big fish.

Maybe one day I will see you out there I would be in a black lund Mr. Pike boat.

You mention musky fishing and that lake has a good supply of tigers

Actually I target the tigers out there quite often. Ive found decent numbers but smaller size. I was out last week and picked up a 30" and a 31" fish one on a homemade spinnerbait and another on a topwater (awaker style).

Enough of the musky talk in the bass forum though...

As far as fishing shallow I follow the same plan shallow at low light and deeper or tighter to cover when bright. The thing is Im a bit of a die hard when it comes to docks but over the last few years Ive really been putting in an effort to learn to fish deep/midlake structure effectively. I think the bass in these areas are underfished, even here in the metro.

Oh I have a blue, lund rebel, Johnson tiller. If its a younger guy thats me (21). If its and older guy it would be my dad.

I am a dock junkie as well. My favorite are old wood docks that lead to deeper water. I have found some docks early in the morning where I can pull a bass from each pier with the old senko or tube. I also like to fish right around the shadows of the boats on the dock. Swimming docks can be good as well. Many are in deeper water and an occasional pig will be shading itself

My true passion is smallmouth and the river and Vermillion have been outstanding over the years. The Mississippi and the St. Croix are great smallie waters.

I have got into a few large Tigers on the lake you mention. The best area is the shorline across from the point where the litte feeder creek comes in. I find the tigers like a much smaller presentation and pulling a number 7 shad rap with a nice leader will get you some nice tigers and bass.

I got a tiger of a dock on a senko there in the water looked like it was pushing 45 inches. I stood little chance on my 6lb test but what a blast as he took for about 5 monster runs until a tooth finally cut my line.

If your ever heading there an evening after work let me know. If I do not have daycare duty I may be able to touch base with you on the water and chase a bass or tiger or eye.

What I do find odd about this lake is I have only caught 1 Northern and most metro lakes like White Bear are loaded with Pike. Maybe the tiger population has something to do with that. I also have seen some carp in that lake that are down right frighting as far as size. I caught one the was a bit over 20lbs but have some in the channels and shallows that must go 40 plus. One day I may target them with corn or a big gob of crawler.

I actually think our slop bite should start heating up now. This has been a strange year for the Alex. area. By now the area around my dock normally would havea pretty solid mat going and the slop bite all day can be fun for a few good fish and usually a piggie once or twice per week. I still don't have the thick mats that we normally see by now, but they are coming. The other thing I noticed was the small panfish are finally back around the dock. Strange year. Deitz and I had a ok under-cut(floating cattail bog)trip this past week, but there was not near the numbers of fish holding on the cuts that you would expect for this time of year.

Hey Dietz, I hit a west metro lake this am with my waders, loomis, and some plastics. I first walked into the lake around 8am as I had to drop the kids off at daycare 1st. I was thowing some berkley power worms 7 inch white t-rigged. Within 30 feet of the pubic access dock I snagged a very respectfull 20.5 incher. I know how much it measured because I asked to gentlemen that were putting in if I could borrow a measuring device of some sort. They were impressed and offered to keep it for me....I think so they could eat it as they were going after sunnies... I let her go. Within 20 mins as I walked the shore 3 fow or less. I hooked into another pig under a fallen tree. This one (no measurement) larger than the 1st and was arguably my largest to date. I'm guessing 21+ maybe 22inches. And very fat over 5 for sure. Tom, that very slow technique worked like a charm... What a great way to start a day of painting at school. Deitz, I teach Highschool Biology & Human Anatomy. I can't afford to take my whole summers off though.

Hey Deitz, I noticed that your post regarding fishing this morning. Do you think those fish were pushed out to the deeper water because of the cool night? I was out this morning also and notice the water temp was 70 degrees when I got out. By the time I came home at 3 PM the water had heated up to 76/77 degrees. Do you think those deep fish have been in transition between deep and shallow as the day goes on? As you mentioned you were just off of a point which I am assuming was shallower water. I was sticking most of my fish today where the bottom content was changing with veg. in close proximity. Just interested in hearing your opinion. Thanks.

P.S. - How is Richie? I used to work with him at Byerly's. Still work for the same company just a different location. smile.gif

Dads doing well, He was out at thehouse here a couple of days ago.. he stays busy, that is for sure.

I think fish do quite a bit of trasitioning, from deep to shallow and vise versa.. however, I also feel that there are quite a few fish that stay deep, and quite a few that stay shallow...

I chose the lake that I did because I knew with this mornings cold temps that deeper fish would be more likely to bite. So I chose a lake that was clear water and deep weedlines...

Sunday I was on a strech of the Mississippi river north of Little Falls on Sunday with two friends who have many years of experience on this area. The day was simply gorgeous, the company was good, and the bite was excellent as well but the species that was on fire was not the mighty bass.

We targeted smallies but try as we might we could not keep the pesky walleyes off the hook. When walleyes are crushing tubes I think the fishing Gods were trying to tell us something. That being said we set up in an area simply know as "the crotch" and enjoyed the walleye fest with my partner and the local pro schooling Mr. Pike with the larger eyes and more numbers. I was relegated to the 14" or smaller eyes for most of the day. When I did get a big fish it was of the rough fish variety. I got my first Redhourse and managed about a 3-4lb channel cat. I also caught more rock bass then I could count with many near the 2lb state record mark. When I finally had what in the water appeared to be a nice 20" eye he decided to cut me at the boat. I also lost a few that I did not see. Thirty five years on the water and on this trip I felt like a rookie. Oh well momma always told there would be days like this.

Overall I could not actually guess to the number of walleye and pike and other misc rough fish that were caught. It seemed like for most of the day one person always had a fish on. The scenery on this stretch of river added to the trips overall success.

Oh and on this day I broke the CPR mode and we brought home a meal of eyes to keep my wife happy.

At the end of the trip we again tried to target smallies on senko's, tubes, topwaters, and spinners but again the walleye would crush these and of course the pike. We managed less then 10 smallies and I was only able to add 2 fish to the bass total for the year.

So with the two I managed from shore on Saturday tossing a little mepps for about 15 minutes and these two I am at 129 for the year.

I will be at the cabin on Vermillion over the 4th and again the week of the 10th and plan on adding alot to the bottom line. If anyone else is up on the big V I will be on the East side so look for guy with way way to many poles in a black Lund "Mr. Pike"

Im at 51.... considering the 7 hours ive been fishing for em i think im doin ok thats just over 7 an hour if i keep up with this pace i will end up catching.....bout 350 this year that will be my goal 350, o yea and 5 hours of that are on a not so productive dock, and my big fish will be 20+ inches which would beat my record by at least 5 inches
