Biggest Follow

Recommended Posts

I am not going to single anyone out, so don't anyone take this personally, but I really chuckle when I hear someone talk about a fish they had follow or lost and describe it as "at least mid 50's".

There have been very few documented catches of fish over 56". In fact, the state record for MN was "only" 56". See what I mean? How could it be that So far in this post, 4 of us have seen fish in the mid 50's and there are so few documented catches?

If I had a nickel for every time someone told me they had a fish that was "at least mid 50's" (meaning 55 or LARGER), well, I would have a helluva lot of nickels. LOL

What's the biggest fish I had follow? At least mid 50's. LOL

In MOST cases I grossly overestimate the length of the fish in the water, but there has been a case or two where I was surprised that "44" was actually a "48".

There is a guy I know that it never fails he either loses or has a follow from an "upper 50" fish while we are out. Surprisingly enough, when I am in the boat with him, I never even see the fish! confused.gif

it is understandable though! i mean, you bring the lure in,do a figure "8" and look down to see this log sitting right under your lure! that few seconds, they look huge! grin.gif i never remember the size. but always remember the eyes looking at me! crazy.gif

I did a quick search on the Muskies Inc. Lunge log and found that there are 3319 muskies registered since 1970 in the 50 to 55 inch range. A search of 55 to 60 inch fish shows a total of 85 fish. My guess is that most of the mid fifty fish people “see” are closer to 50 but I know I have gotten a little excited when it comes to estimating the size of a follow. The biggest follow I have seen was 8 inches……………………………….. Between the eyes grin.gif

This last weekend we had a 47in on the first time i seen it i said it was 45in ( it took some time to see it fishing over 70 ft of water) it was actually 47in it made me happy that i thought it was smaller than it really was!!!!

as for the biggest follow???? Canada L.O.W I would say 52 to 55. 55 being max!!!! never seen a fish that big next to the boat but i will never know didn't get her!!!!! But still gotta love all the stories!!!!

Those type of fish are reasons we all go back out there again and again.

I'll never forget a story from a buddy of mine when he was quite young, I believe it may have been his first experience with a musky. Well, he and his dad were fishing bass (if memory serves) and on one cast a very large musky followed his bait to the boat and attacked at boatside but missed, scaring the daylights out of him. He casted out again only to have the same thing happen. After the second or third such violent attack at boatside he dropped the rod in the bottom of the boat and stopped fishing. :-)

Rowan Lake Ontario, late 80's-Big enough to be seen on both sides of the boat at the same time.Followed my buddies Eagle Tail(red/flame)

LOTW, 2004-Appeared like a mirage.Upper 50's I'd say.I sat down and smoked 5 cigarettes in 10 minutes.That big.

Mille Lacs,Sept. 2005-The "Phone Call" fish.If she hits the bottom of the net, time to start makin' phone calls.

These 3 were in a totally different class, and all 3 were considerably larger that the 54 I released on LOTW last year.Mutants. Steve
