Seems to me that you could use some help with that shad rap wink.gifgrin.gif

I was just at HD today and musta missed that. I'll check out the one in West St. Paul tomorrow.

Were the prices any good?

I wouldn't call their prices great but at least its another place to get a piece of the big pie. If you are indeed clueless, by all means go to the small store where the guys know it all and can help you. I myself walked out of Wall Mart because the guy was clueless about fishing license machines. I got much better service at the local small shop downtown. Actually, I wish we had a Fleet Farm in Shakopee.

New front door update: Its still in the box and I'm fishing again tomorrow grin.gif

I would hardly call HD a main source for tackel. I would never think to myself, "I need to stock up for my trip, looks like another stop at HD!" That's what bait shops are for. However, if I was in there for say, a new toy, I might pick up a stick bait just 'cause I'm there.

IMHO, Big box stores like Gander, Cabelas and Bass Pro will never take the place of the local bait shop, but I believe that they have their place in this day and age.

Fishing tackle at HD huh? And people wonder why the small bait and tackle shops are going out of business left and right mad.gif To me, all these big box stores are no better than Walmart. Sure they have an unmatched selection but they come into an area and charge next to nothing for everything they sell and when they "buy out" the small competition, the prices start going up.

I'd rather shop at a place that actually smells like bait than walk into a huge store with a log sided front enterance where they sell everything from jigs to boats and ATV's.

I happen to see competition as a good thing, big or small. I am one of the little guys with my own business venture. I've recently started up my business and plan to stay small. I honestly believe that staying small will allow me to maintain a competitive advantage over the big box stores. So although I understand that the big stores are going to cause some of the little guys to go out of business. I also believe that a well laid out business plan will allow anyone to succeed, big or small.

I'm not sure what type of expertise it takes to buy or sell a Rapala or Storm lure? confused.gif I was at HD in Elk River last night and noticed they had a decent selection of those but very little else to offer. I would not make it a point to go to HD to get my tackle, but if I'm already there, & they've got a decent deal on a crankbait I feel I have enough expertise and knowledge to be able to buy that without any help. grin.gif

I've got some errands to run this afternoon and would just as soon make one stop rather than two or three. Gander Mountain for sure is on my list. Does Gander display the roofing paper, shingles and caulking in the camping or firearm section?

I see we wont have many complainers when the Joe's, Thorne Bros and other like stores go out of business. You folks will be able to buy raps AND sheetrock in one stop. One more step on the road to Generica.

I've never been in a Joe's, so I don't know a whole lot about them. But Thorne Brothers will NEVER go out of business because they can't compete, guaranteed. Competition isn't a bad thing.

I like Joe's because its pretty close to where I work and always have good luck getting somebody who know how to print out a license, but I guess I wonder how they make it. Not the biggest selection in town. My guess is that their ski stuff carries them for the most part and they make just enough off everything else. They have great help in the gun department too, so maybe its not that hard to see how they make it. Sportsman's Warehouse on the other hand in Coon Rapids, I have never been that excited about the place.

Fair competition is ok.Unfair is bad.Selling items at no margins to gain market share, off shore production of items to resell here for profit, small guys working out of the homes without paying taxes or for cash, bad competition.Sorry to rant, this really gets me going.I would rather by from some one that knows what he is selling.Burl.

Seems to be a trend here. I was in Menards in Alexandria on the weekend and as I walked in from the garden center I spotted a display of underwater cameras and video displays (I think they were Atlantis, certainly not Aqua View).

I guess if HD sells it, Menards has to try too, next up Lowes.

Can't see any of these guys being able to offer the product variety most serious fisherman want. Basic raps and Ugly sticks most likely.

If there's people not paying taxes they're going to get caught eventually. Not a very wise businessman and one that probably won't be around very long.

I would agree that competition that involves trying to screw the public over is a bad thing, such as selling cheap knock offs of quality products. But most people can see through that, I hope. If you're comparing apples to apples, competition is great.

If Home Depot is carrying the same products that everyone else is (which they are), this is fair competition. Their prices aren't going to be any cheaper than anywhere else.

Fair competition, yes it certainly is. however, as a member of the general public, I dont want to support that type of competition. However, the part about their prices not being cheaper than anywhere else is simply not true when it comes to big box stores. Do you know the WalMart model? They tell the supplier what they will pay and thus buy and sell considerably cheaper than the small, locally owned stores that house the expertise. Due to volume buying, the big stores buy and sell for less. My whole point is simply this; I like small stores that have people who know their products. They are an invaluable resource that I hope does not get lost because someone wants to save a nickel here and there.

Cody,

Agreed. I can't say that I'll be buying any of my fishing supplies at Home Depot either. Even if I'm there and they have something I need. I'll go a half mile down the road and support the retailer of my choosing. As a consumer, it's great to have choices. Price is important, but it's far from the only factor.

Its hard not to buy things on impulse,it doesnt matter where you are.I came acroos some holgrphic Rapalas at home depo that were something I was short on.^ rows of sizes and styles and got last 5.Some freinds of mine are building tackle and cant seem to get in every store because copy cats are cutting quality and price to get shelf space in lots of stores. Was glad to see them in their and called him and he said they get paid the same from depot as other people they sell to.We are way to limited out here in one shop town to get all of our needs .So dont expect anyone to pass up any chance to see more sporting goods. If we were in Alexandruia or St. Cloud or Fargo <metro etc we always have to stop at srores to buy tackle, locally our one store doesnt have a fishing buyer,or much help that actually fishes so home depot is equally as qualified. No selection in Little Crow Region, bring it on home depot wenards or anyone else.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
