JIvers
ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre has told the Packers he will return for the 2006 season. I look forward to one more three-INT performance from # 4 in the Metrodome, as Favre continues to play "gunslinger" behind a third-rate offensive line. On the downside, this means one more year of shameless slurping from the media and announcers--if the Packers play on NBC at all this season, and John Madden is in the booth, remind me to watch something else. JohnMickish
I bet he comes back more as a mentor than a player. I don't expect him to start more than 8 games this year.
mnwild
I'm glad he's playing 1 more season. I don't care what people say about him, he's a hell of a player and there really isn't any other QB in the league I would want behind the center (well maybe 1 or 2 QB'S). rundrave
forget him, the guy is a complete hypocrite I hope he has another terrible year (for the vikes sake). Dont get me wrong, the guy is a great competitor as HAS BEEN a class act guy.But to call out Javon Walker and others in the past about contract issues and not showing up for camp(holiding out etc) then to go and basically do it himself is beyond me. I know his situation was slightly different and the packers are the ones who allowed him to do it. But he could have handled it in a better way, and I know it had to be one tough call for him to make, I just didnt see how it was fair to the team and the other players. The guy has seen better days, he needs to just hang it up. I am a vikes fan, but atleast the packers can finally figure out where to go after Farve held them hostage the whole offseason.
Down to Earth
Sorry, I just don't buy into the "Favre held the Packers Hostage" play. Besides its only April that hardly counts as the whole off season as I don't think training camps start until July sometime. The fact is Thompson would not have done anything different if Favre told him back in January. Thompson has never been one to go out and overspend in Free Agency and he even said it wouldn't have changed their thoughts about the draft if Favre still was unsure going into the weeekend. Its not like its a day before training camp starts and the Packers didn't know.Heck even the Asros don't know if Clemens is officially retiring or coming back and we are already into the baseball season. rundrave
I agree with you DTE, its just that nothing has changed at all as far as the overall picture. I could understand if Favre was waiting to see what the Packers were going to do in the off-season to help persuade his decision. But the team is pretty much the same since the day the season ended. So what was his reasoning for stringing it all out. I sure the media blew this whole thing out of proportion. But I just thought it could have been handled differently. Definately not an easy position to be in thats for sure. I would just prefer a guy like that to go out and end his career on a positive note. otto_man
my take on it is that they knew he was coming back all along because if they didn't, they would have re-signed Nall! i'm thinking he should be able to put up good enough numbers to win the MVP again this year!! xedge2002
I never would have thought he was coming back. I have a friend whose dad has been a die hard Packer all his life so over new year's we went out to see them play the Seahawks so he could see Favre play before he retired. When the game was over he stayed on the field until all of the other Packer players had shook his hand and went off and it just seemed like that was it he was taking his last look before he walked off for good. It was pretty cool though all of the fans chanted 5-6 times during the game "One More Year" and were chanting it as he walked off the field. That is one field you if ever have a chance to go see a game I would jump on it even if you hate the Packers. I am a normal Minnesotan and despise them but the field and fans are unreal, true diehards. The place was sold out even though the Pack had nothing to play for. buzzsaw
Quote: Besides its only April that hardly counts as the whole off season as I don't think training camps start until July sometime It's the END of April and he took his sweet time, IF I was a Packer fan and thats a huge IF, Brett Favre would have tarnished his image with me, If it's not obvious to everybody out there that his head is not in the game and that he is simply playing one more year for the money and all the ESPN footage and happy goodbyes he will receive you are nuts. A class act would have retired and not worried about all the whoopla that surrounds a player of his magnitudes last season. With that being said, I'm glad he's coming back because he forces everything, has not much talent around him and is a step slow... he will get hurt... put it on the board! buzzsaw
Don't tell Windy I said that, pleeeeeeze! Windy has grown on me, I kinda appreciate him now... he's playful. I only say that about Favre as he has cast a dark spell of negativity on himself with his period of indecision/packer fan hosting holding pattern. I predict the bad karma has been cast and he should play scared, very scared.
Eric Wettschreck
Look at it this way. We get one more year of announcers heads up Favres butt.
DitchPickle13
I'm surprised you guys don't like him just because he's an outdoors guy! Judging by the highly emotional responses towards him, I guess the heated border rivalry over-rides that.
walleyefisher0990
just curious what you guys think, how much will favre really play this year. I dont know if the packers really should have him come back. why not use the money they will be paying him to get some new players, maybe some lineman. I think the packers need to start rebuilding the team, and a good start would be to get a good offensive line, and a younger quarterback.Dont get me wrong i think favre is great, was great. But does holding on to him reallpy benifit them. Just my thoughts.
Down to Earth
I think as long as he stays healthy he will be in the line up. Also his salary is not hurting the team. Even with his salary they were one of the top 5 teams going into free agency with the most cap money to spend. Thompson, is not one to go out and spend big chunks of dough on free agent talent(though the Woodson signing may disprove that a bit), still he is one to build an organization through the draft. Don't forget he drafted Rodgers last year, and it may not hurt for him to sit another year. Both Palmer and McNair sat when they first came into the league and long term, they were probably better for it. I think they will address some of the o-line issues in the draft this weekend. Keep in mind also, they are putting in the zone blocking scheme this season, so that should help with the running game. I'm going into the season with some optimism as I think the NFC North will once again be a little weak. Given this day in the NFL you never know what can happen. End of the Line
They have a younger quarterback. He could have gone number 1 or 2 in the draft last year; his name is Aaron Rodgers. If the Packers would have just spent a little money and got Lavar Arington and a O Lineman in the free agency besides C. Woodson they'ed have a decent run at the playoffs with the #5 pick in the draft. I admit Farve is not in MVP form, but he is still a good player and a great competitor.Sounds like they may get rid of Javon for Ashlee LeLie from the Broncos.
