walleye rod and reel

Recommended Posts

I would get a good 7' med/light with a fast sensitive tip. Lots of good rods and reels to choose from.

I suggest you go try a bunch of rods and reels out together in a store and see what ya like for what price. A good, well balanced combo is a must with rigging. It really cuts down on fatigue and it can be more sensitive.

Here's the best advice I could give. Spend the majority of the money on high quality rod, that's the most important and that's how you feel the bite. I would recomend looking at St Croix. The reel doesn't have to be expensive, you're not feeling bites with the reel. Gander MTN guide series reels are actually good quality for the money.

I agree that you can't go wrong with either a St Croix Avid or Legend.... or one of the new Shimanos, Crucial or Compre.

If it's for rigging, make sure its med light, fast tip and at least 7 feet!

If you go with the new Shimano Crucial I don't think you would need a med light to me that rod seems a little too light. The med action is very sensitive and light in the 7'-2". I would tend to agree with the med light statement in MOST other rods and I too would reccomend at least a 7' rod with a fast tip. As northlander stated balance is the key with any combo that you set up.

JMO - but if you want to get by with one spinning rod to cover several applications a medium light to medium 6'6" will do a lot of things for you. You can pitch jigs, vertical jig, snap jigs, drag jigs, lindy rig, spinner rigs (not on a Bottom Bouncer) and even slip float. My best piece of advice is make sure the reel and the rod balance. To me that makes a HUGE difference. My fav 6'6" St.Croix Premier and a ABU reel. smile.gif

St. Croix Avid AS76mLXF. 7 1/2 foot spinning. Soft tip nice back bone.

or 6'9" Avid - AS69MLXF

or 6'6" Avid - AS66MLF

Avids are great rods for the money.

Bass Pro Shops Extreme XPS, 6'6", Medium action, plus balance kit. It's a quality high modulus rod on sale right now. Personally, I think it's the same thing only better version of my dad's 6'6" Avid, for $60 less.

Might look at the Walleye series rods at BPS they have now - I picked up one this week and added a Pflueger President 6735 to it for a total of $130. Well balanced and nice fast tip. Use the extra $70 for new tackle that we always seem to need. grin.gif

I learned something yesterday and I thought others might be interested. I am also a fan of Pflueger reels, silky smooth and reasonably priced. I went to the Gander grand opening in Blaine yesterday and ended up talking to the Pflueger rep for a while. I was looking for the president model but I preferred the rubber grip on the handle (like the Medalist) instead of the wooden grip. He told me that the gander guide series is made by Pflueger and is the same reel, identical in every way just a different color and decals, but has the rubber grips and includes a spare machined aluminum spool. I bought it for just under $40. If you don't care about the name on the label you can get a great reel at a bargain price! Also picked up a 7 foot guide series IM8 medium action rod for $59.95 to end up with a very good walleye rig for $100.00, which I feel is a great value for a good quality rig. Spending more money doesn't always get you better equipment.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
