Fireline

Shorelunch

Question

  • 0

Just put some fireline on my Shimano spinning reel. It worked great the first time out and now for some reason the whole spool of line itself spins around the actualy spool on the reel. Should I have put something on the spool before adding the line?? Is this common??

Thanks

FYI, if you are putting fireline on a small reel or don't want to use mono backing, you can always use a small piece of tape to secure the line to the spool. After you get a few wraps on the spool you shouldn't have any more problems. smile.gif

I also use tape. Also, after I put new fireline on I take it out and let all of the line out into the water behind the boat to get it wet, then reel it all in to ensure that the line is tight on the reel. Haven't had a problem since by doing that.

A couple very good points have been brought up here.

1. I too use the tape method of attaching, or should I say, securing the line to the spool to keep it from slipping. I just put a 1/8-1/4 wide wrap of electrical tape around the spool and then try to get one wrap over the line. I've never had problems when I've done this.

2. If you don't get the fireline on tight enough, it'll start to dig down into the spool and cause yourself a little headache. (I'm just thinking out loud here to get my ice rods respooled before the lakes freeze and let out all the line behind the boat with a good weight on and crank it back in again.)

I've been using Fireline for the last several years. The first year had a short learning curve. The same problem came up right away. I cured it with a single wrap of Tommy Tape in the bottom of the spool. Problem SOLVED! That stuff is GREAT!! I have found SO many uses for it and now I've got it on hand if I need to try it on something new. I've always got a roll in the boat. It REALLY works to hold your reel onto the cork/sponge reel seat. And NO tape residue.

Anchor,

You need to first put some mono line onto your spool then tie the fireline onto the mono, this will solve your problem. If you're wondering what kind of knot to use to tie the mono to the fireline, there should have been a slip of paper in the fireline spool that shows a good knot.

Ya know it not too spendy if you have someone spool it on there for you, I know gander mountain has it pretty cheap,I suspect quite a few others do too wink.gif . Personally I like power pro a bit better (but I still use fireline too), but I'll not side track your thread, I only wish I could buy that in "bulk" like the fire line.
