Motor Not Peeing Well Initially

TSCTSC

Question

Noticed that when I started the motor last outing, the pee stream was not very strong for about 5-10 seconds. And then after that, when I increased the RPM and starting moving, it was better. I had the impeller changed last fall. I had not noticed this before and am not sure if this is normal or not. Please help. Thanks.

There may be some dirt in your water pump.

Try putting one of those motor flushung muffs on it and flushing it out.

I have also cleaned the dirt out on older motors with an air compresser with a rubber tipped blow nozzel.

If the stream does not increase you may have another bad impeller.??

If it was my motor and there was only a few seconds of decreased flow I would not be to worried. If the flow stops you are in trouble! frown.gif

If you have ever run the motor while it was out of the water you may have damaged the new impeller. It sometimes only takes a few seconds!

Was it ever started dry even for a few seconds?

Did you put a little Vasoline on it when you first installed it?

If there was any old burnt rubber inside the housing that wasnt 100% cleaned out when the new one was installed it might have ruined the new one already too.

Excess dirt, sand, mud as mentioned before too.

What about ice??? Could there be some ice in the system that made the pee poor initially, and then got better as it cleared?? If so, I should not have this problem when the weather is warmer, right?

I have had the port where the water comes out of the engine. Take a small wire and insert in the hole where water comes out, while you have the water muffs on. If any blockage, it will be unloadged then. caj

Not having a stream for 5-10 seconds isn't unusual. On the other hand having a weak stream isn't good. Once the thermostat opens up you should have a good stream while idling. Like Cliff stated there could be debris somewhere. EOTL asked, did you run the outboard out of water. I've seen guys start their outboard out of water just to hear it start I guess. Its hard on the impeller and a bad idea.

I would guess that what is happening is that the delay is due to getting all the air out of the cooling passages, which would result in a lighter stream. As Surface Tension said, if it's only for a little bit after start up and it's just fine after that I don't think you have anything to worry about...

I had a 30 HP that did that as well. I took a piece of wire and poked it in the pee hole. Cleaned it right up. Just a little Muck in the outgoing port. Not saying this is your problem, but it is a quick and easy possible fix.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
