opsirc
does anyone know if there is a place to get info on ball depth; that would give you the depth of the ball under different speeds and cable lenght. ie: if you were using a 10lb ball with a 100 ft cable out, trolling at 1.5 mph. what would be the depth of the ball.and two on planner boards, at th seminar in Duluth that WLSTA put on, they recommended to put a rubber bungee between the board and line, or connect the pulley to the mast using a spring. I have aLways just connected the board to the line without either. Thought being both would add more give to the line decreasing hookup or releases. what does everyone else do and why. TSCTSC
Not sure if trolling depth secrets book would have it? You can find it at Cabelas, I think.
Northlander
Opsirc we put a rubber snubber on at the board. This cuts down on popped realeases due to wind and waves. I dont have a mast on my boat but run Offshore in line boards and have no problems with them popping off. Only thing is wrap your superlines before clipping them on.I dont know of anyplace that shows you the amount of blowback on the rigger balls. Sorry. Tom Linderholm
Then theres current, this will play with your depths as well out on the big lake. Interesting topic, if you do find some info please post back and let us know.
strat-o-caster
I run a snubber at my board also... Not sure of the ball but what I thought was interesting they said was run one of those (underwater thermometer and depth meters gadgets)off the ball to get your ball depth ... ScottL
In reference to determining depth of cannonballs at different speed and line out. If your transducer is mounted at the rear of the boat you should be able to see your cannon ball on your graph screen. Set just one downrigger out. Note counter number on downrigger. Determine depth of ball on screen and then vary your speed up and down to determine how much variance you get. That is the easiest way I know to determine ball deflection. Fireguy
Saw a chart that used the angle of the line entering the water to approximate the depth. Simple geomitry to figure the depth. Problem is it doesn't take into acount bow in the cable. A simple graph would give you an approsimate depth. This works better with heavier balls as there is less cable bowing. opsirc
I have talked to the folks at cannon and big jon. The folks at big Jon recommended a book called Percision Trolling to find info. The folks at Cannon sent a 1 page chart. I did read one onther site that mentioned a book called Troller's handbook. Was not able to get it to copy here, will have to try something else.O
