UW women win WCHA championship

The University of Wisconsin scored three times on the power play, Meghan Horras stopped 28 shots and the Badgers beat Minnesota, 4-1, on Sunday in the WCHA Women's Championship game in Minneapolis.

The victory gives third-ranked UW (33-4-1) an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals.

UW's Cyndy Kenyon continued her weekend scoring surge 5:14 into the game, deflecting a pass from Meaghan Mikkelson into the Minnesota net for a power-play tally. Kenyon, who scored four times in Saturday's semifinal victory over St. Cloud State, scored just eight times in the regular season.

"I told the team I was saving it for the playoffs and that the first 35 games were just a warm up," she joked. "Seriously, I was just in the right place at the right time this weekend. Sara Bauer is such an amazing player and she found ways to get the puck to me. I give her lots of credit."

Bauer had four assists Saturday and three on Sunday.

Allie Sanchez scored the lone goal for No. 4 Minnesota (27-10-1).

otto, you are the man! Here are some facts for ya.

Minnesota was denied the opportunity to become only the third program in the history of college hockey to win three straight national titles. Only Michigan's men of 1951-53 and Minnesota-Duluth's women of 2001-03 can claim this feat. Coupled with the loss this weekend on the men's side, it also marks the first year since 2001 in which Minnesota failed to win a national championship in ice hockey.

The championship was Wisconsin's first in ice hockey since the men's triumph in 1990.

Maybe your teams can get to level we have been at for years on the west side of the St. Croix. smirk.gif

Don't leave out the mighty Bucks and Brew Crew! If were heading to the football forum, when is Favre-vous going to tell the world, I mean the packer fans if he is retiring or not? It's like that team is a hostage to his indecisions, whatcha think? I think they'll pull a Detroit Lion move and draft another QB on April 29th.

C’mon. This is a hockey forum. You know, the only real man’s sport out there besides maybe football. The Twins are fun if they make it to the playoffs and if I get sick of watching my grass grow. As for basketball, I don’t consider that a sport at all. It’s more like a hobby or something to do for exercise, like bowling or racketball. Besides, didn’t the T’wolves move to another state a few years ago? What are you guys talking about them for?

Let’s get back to hockey. I will take Wisconsin to win it all. That defense is crazy good! Twelve shutout periods? And in the playoffs? These boys are on a roll. As long as the Gophers thought the hockey season ends in February, I say “Go Red”.
