Go to eye baits

Recommended Posts

Early in the season I prefer a standard 1/4oz or 1/8oz chartreuse and/or orange leadhead jig tipped with either a fathead or a 3"-4" sucker minnow. Sometimes I'll long-line a minnow on a red hook. 9 times out of 10 though I'll be fishing the plain leadhead jig and minnow early in the season.

Now through the St.Croix opener, plastics, jig and minnow and cranks, I usually start out with cranks and plastics and move to a jig and minnow if the bite is tough. If I am really working the river hard then I pull out the jigging spoons and blade baits but it depends on water temp, current and water coloration on any given day. I prefer to fish without the live bait first then work promising areas with a jig and bait if I can't hookup with the artificials.

It's got to be the good old Jig and Minnow, then I would say bottom bouncer and spinner setup with a crawler, then probablly casting plugs!!!

GOOD LUCK AND GOOD FISHING!!!

Hot Pink!

1/8 oz collared jig with no tail. Take a flathead minnow and run the hook in the mouth and out the gill. Push the minnow all the way so the mouth goes over the collar of the jig, then run the hook back through the top (back) of the minnow.

This will give the minnow/lure less movement and help catch those fish that are bitting short.

harveylee, the thought of tying up first thing Saturday morning makes me giddy, has to be 3/8oz. walking sinker, swivel(not a cheap one), 7 feet of #6 flourocarbon, and a no. 6 octopus hook(black) with a red bead. And the biggest brownest leech in the bucket.

Opening day on the St.Louis River I will have every kind of jig made in my boat. I love to jig! Ill be using minnows and plastics on them. I really like the JR's rattle jigs and the Angel Eye jigs. Both are great either with bait or plastics. The Angel eye jig really works great in current. After about 4-6 days I will start pulling bouncers and spinners and maybe some cranks. The new Taildancer is quickly becoming a favorite along with the old stanbys like the Shad Rap, Hot n Tots, Grappler Shads, Bomber Long A, Fastracks, Daves Kabooms and Ripsticks to name a few.

Early & Late season - jig & minnow.. slip bobber rig in the evening

Warmer it gets, the more I move... so it goes to spinners rigs with a bottom bouncer or trolling cranks. Gotta do more of the cranks though... always seems like I use it as a "nothing else is working, might as well try this"...

But nothing beats a jig & minnow grin.gif

That depends on what yu are calling early season. Ice out is my early season here in SD.

In any case I fish jig and minnow or plastic up to about the mid may and then start to switch to casting and trolling crankbaits once the watertemps get into the mid to high 50's.

If in anycase I would rather be casting jigs on points and rockpiles if I could have my choice.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
