metrojoe
Excellent article. Have you ever tried to us the steel split shots? The fins are to weak and only allow for one use.
DEADhead
Actually, there is sufficent evidence that lead fishing tackle has contributed to Common Loon mortality, as well as raptors and other diver ducks. Do a google search on 'the effects of lead tackle' and there are some great articles on the subject from reputable sources. Not trying to play devil's advocate on this, but just wanted to let others know that there were other viewpoints on the subject...
knoppers
I have debated this subject till I was blue in the face. I know that lead fishing tackle is not a big enviromental problem, but try convincing a bunch of enviromental duck hunters. a ban on lead fishing tackle would put all the small mom and pop tackle companys out of business, which I believe make the best tackle on the market. where does commen sense end here. yes lead is a toxic, but there are also other materials that are as much, or more toxic out there that you here nothing about. about the loon thing, minnesota's loon population is stabile to growing, I don't see a mortallity problem here in the midwest due to lead fishing tackle. I think a bigger threat to loons is discarded fishing line, maybe we should ban that also. good article roughfisher.
DEADhead
I personally would rather spend my energy fighting the mercury issue and clean water, than lead tackle....
