Squirrel reppellant

Has anybody used any of the squirrel reppellant thats out on the market? I have seen the fox urine powder that you shake around the ground or the stuff that you can mix in with bird seed to keep them away. I have these bird feeders hanging from the overhang of the house that I want to keep them off of. They clim the brick and them launch themselves at the feeders and hang there and eat all the seed. They are keeping the birds away, and they are eating all the seed!

Bassin,

There really is no such thing. There are squirrel deterrants however, such as squirrel resistant (some say proof) feeders, the things you mentioned, or a good dog, but when it all comes down to it, you really only have two options. Kill em' or feed em. Some folks won't be too big on the first idea, but that's not really where I was going anyways. A 50lb bag of corn will last you a good long time dependent on the number of squirrels you have, but if you feed them away from your feeders--they will leave your feeders alone.

PS--they're really good with dumplings.

Well, feeding them seemed to make the problem worse. I put out some corn for them and now it seems like there are about 3 times as many! A have another bird feeder invader as well. Although I like this one! There have been deer coming into the back yard and eating all the birdseed from one of the feeders I have hanging from a pole. Its not one of the flat trays either. Its one with little holes in it. So it just licks and licks until it gets it all. she has been coming in the evening around 6. Last night she came back with a smaller one. What makes this really unnique is that I live in Golden Valley! Not the suburbs or anything. I live a a mile or so from the corner of HWY 55 and 169.

these two come every day, I put a scoop or two of corn on the ground along with the wasted bird seed. the cobs of corn stuck in the trees in the backround seem to keep the squirrls occupied.

Stray...Nice that you can get deer so close to your house!.....wish I could get deer in my yard......lol!....would make for some great photo opportunities!...squirrels are in my feeders everyday here also......knocked a couple suet feeders down yesterday(broke the little chain)...but I guess I finally gave up on the little critters....just watch em like the birds.lol!...I really don't mind the squirrels,it's those pigeons I don't like!.....nothing so far this winter though...I'm sure they'll find the feeders by summer.....

Same here. I trapped 22 last winter off the deck and 15 in the month of December alone. I got 3 one day and the next morning there were 5 on the deck....I gave up. It seems like when you caught a dominant sqirrel the rif-raf would move in immediately. I have less sqirrels on the deck when I let them keep the territory "policed".

But when they rip apart a feeder I want to get even. I have been toying with the idea of creating some contraptions to have fun with them. Like cataputling them off the deck when they hit a trip wire. Or some remote controlled "swatters". It would at least keep them on their toes.

There was a show on PBS 10 or 15 years ago I think, about having fun with the critters. I think it was actually from England but same problem there. Everything from a route to the feeder over a PVC tube with a rope inside that would roll them off to a catapult on the feeding chair. Nothing deadly for PBS of course!

Since my last post about the deer they have been coming during the night sometime. I wake up to an empty bird feeder and I have been putting out corn. Last night though, they came around 7. There were 6 this time! 3 bucks. One was a little one, one was a 6 pointer, and the other was an 8. And, this time I put the corn about 8 steps out the back door. Its too dark though for a pic without flash. With flash it just reflects of the window and you cant see. Which sucks becasue they were so close! I can stand in the door right next to them and they don't care. Remember, this is in the middle of the city, not the suburbs!

bassin, I live just down the street from you at 169 and 36th. We don't have any deer problems here, thats what you get for living in one of the better suburbs. grin.gif It is to bad they are not coperative enough for you to get some photos, its the least they could do since you are kind enough to feed them.

General Mills has some land a few blocks down just off 169. I'm assuming they live in there. They just need to come when its light out. Otherwise they are only a few feet away from me and would be some great pics. I can move around a lot and they don't seem to mind either.

so its starting to get out of hand. 8 more came by last night. All does and some younger ones. So if you include the 3 bucks from the other night and assume the 3 does were part of the group last night then I'm up to 11! I got pics this time. It was really dark but after they were there I while I figured I would just turn the lite on and snap a pic quick as they ran away. They didnt even flinch! The pictures are really bad, and dark but at least you can see how close they are.

Now, how do I post them?? confused.gif

Bassin,

I think I would much rather have your visitors in the night then the ones that are visiting my feeders.

I think they smell the suet? Not sure how to get rid of these buggers?!?!?!

We have found that if we put additional feeders away from the house it seems to keep the squirrels out there. Not really fair to kill the little rascals in my opinion. What the hell.....everybodys gotta eat!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
