muzzleloader law

Recommended Posts

I was wunder if anybody knew why in minnesota we cant use a scope on our muzzle loaders? most of the other states allow it, or maybe there is a web site out there pertaining to this. I heard from one guy they just about passed it for this year but i dont know if he really knew what he was saying. So if anybody could help me out it would be greatly appreciated. confused.gif

You can use scopes on Muzzleloaders during the normal gun season if you choose to do so (aka. general firearms season), but during the actual Muzzleloader season you may not.

Remember you can only hunt one gun season in MN, general firearms or muzzleloader unless you purchase the All-Season License(Archery, General Firearms, Muzzleloader).

If you do hunt the all season license option you may use a muzzleloader during the general gun season with a scope, and then take the scope off for the actual muzzleloader season.

Glad we are on the subject. I recall hearing the D.N.R. say something about fair chase and yes, keeping it primitive. I also heard lots of hunters last summer saying the D.N.R. were considering allowing scopes, but it never transpired. I am seriously considering buying a CVA Kodiak for next year. I did a lot of research because I have never muzzle loaded before and want to. Any thoughts on the gun or CVA in general? BC

From what I understand the CVA Kodiak Pro 209 is the T/C Omegas main competition within the muzzleloader category. All in all they are fairly similar guns and I have been recommended both from both friends and those selling them.

I believe the CVA Kodiak Pro was new this last year and is a bit more expensive than the CVA Kodiak but not as much as the Omega. All in all however the differences between the 3 are very minimal.

My buddy used the CVA Kodiak in Colorado last year to take down an elk at about 80yrds and it performed flawlessly. Thats enough proff for me and I plan on purchasing one in the next year. Also, He claims he can group 3-4" at 100yrds no problem without a scope.

Seems like both guns are priced comparable when looking at the cabelas HSOforum, with the Omega being a bit more pricey.

Knute78, buddy of mine at work said he prefers the 45 over the 50 because it shoots flatter. The Kodiak 45 Magnum with a 28 inch barrel is on Cabelas web site for $149.00. I am planning on purchasing that rifle. Blued barrel and synthetic black stock. BC

For what its worth, CVA's are good low end guns. I had one before I bought my Optima. They are not the quality of T/C though. The CVA gun you are looking at is a copy of the Optima design which has revolutionized in-lines. I know they are expensive, but go with the original and better gun if you can. I didn't have much for problems with the CVA, it is just clear the quality isn't there, all the way from fit to materials, its just a little cheaper deal...

As to scopes, this has been discussed on a few threads already. They aren't allowed here or many other places during the ML season. Previous posters correctly described this and the gun season and all season license issues. I personally don't support allowing them during the ML season. I'm fine with inlines, pellets and sabots (all of which I use) but nothing more modern during the primitive season please.

Yes, I got myself confused while I was typing that, I have the Omega and that's what I'd get again.

Shouldn't try to type on here and do talk on the phone at the same time!!! Hate to think what I told the guy on the phone... shocked.gif

I've shot about 15 deer now with my CVA and overall I'm very pleased with the accuracy and feel of the gun(hunterbolt). The only complaint I have is the cheap plastic open sights. they are total junk. I finally upgraded to cva metal ones and although they are more durable they still aren't perfect. I don't regret buying my gun though...
