line question

Recommended Posts

Bought my first baitcaster(shimano curado) last summer and after a few weekends of getting used to it really liked it for casting cranks, spinnerbaits, and buzzbaits. I was using 20 lb fireline which after awhile discovered was mostly frayed I suppose from cutting into itself. Thinking of putting on either 50 lb power pro or trying a 12-15 lb flourocarbon...never used flouro except as a leader...wondering which line might be better for casting these baits and if using flouro in a baitcaster is more of a pain with overruns.

Lucky,

I use flourocarbon for casting cranks and some spinners. It has worked great for me. I also use Power Pro in some situations which also works well. I'm not a fan of fireline because of what you are running into, just my opinion though. I use 12-20# Flourocarbon and 20-40# Power Pro.

Good Luck

I have waited to reply to this question because I wasn't sure how to answer it. I match my line to what I am doing. I am lucky/messed up enough to own many rod reel combos. Each rod/reel combo usually only has one job. So matching the line to the job is quite easy. If I were stuck to just one rod, I dont even know what I would put on it for line. I couldnt decide, because both mono and braid and florocarbon have very strong points that they all excel at. However, if put on the spot, I would choose 14lb mono.

I feel it does the best of all worlds, abrasion resistance, keeps fish hooked better, relitively low stretch and sensitive.

I bought a spool of Western Filament stuff at Gander, somewhere in the 25# range, and had good luck with it, surely beat the old large diamater stuff on my reel. I think Power Pro would be even better. I'd have gotten PP except that they were out when I needed it. I seldom use flourocarbon except as leader material. I don't think I'd be happy with it's casting performance.

Thanks for all the info. guys! Deitz did you say you weren't sure how to answer?...didn't expect that from one of my favorite sources of bassin' info. grin.gifAlthough I do use 4 or 5 rods for largies I only have 1 baitcaster. I'll probably try some power pro and at some time experiment with flouro or mono.

Florocarbon is great for crankbaits because it doesnt stretch much and you can rip that crankbait through the weeds better, you will need a whippy rod though so you dont pull the hooks out of the fishes mouth. Braid is the best line when fishing jigs and top water, I believe it is a must!

Lucky- Thanks for the compliment... I think it would be good to start a post on what rod/reel combos people have rigged for what applications. I'm heading to Devils Lake ND today for a HotSpotOutdoors show shoot, mabye I'll have enought time to start something, if not I'll do it when I get back.

(I had a little time this a.m. please check in on this post Line/Rod Combos. )

Lucky Lure: Now that I pimped Deitz a little, blush.gif I can get to the line question. One rod, tossing cranks,spinner-baits and buzzers. I would go with mono, couple of reasons. (1) mono is normally limper than fluoro, so it handles a little easier. (2) For shallower cranks, rattle-traps, big O's, bandits, fluoro sinks and will pull them down a little deeper, same for spinner-baits and buzzers. (3) Mono is alot cheaper, so you can change your line more times during the season. All that being said, or typed... if most of you casting is done in junk, around docks, pencil reeds, you get the idea, then I would stay with a braid. I use mainly Power Pro.

Thanks Agape, you just helped seal the deal. Since what I mainly fish is pencil reeds, shallow weed lines, and docks I'm gonna go with power pro, but if i ever figure out how to get into those deeper bass I may just have to buy another baitcaster and put some mono or flouro on it.
