Getting a Title

I had an old farmer give me an old Spartan boat trailer he had sitting in a pasture for the last 7 years, He didn't have a title for it, and the serial number is unreadable. How does one go about getting the trailer licensed?

I had that happen with my first boat trailer. They kind of winked at me and asked if I had any work to do to trailer. Said, "yep, needs lights." Walked out with it registered as homemade

If he does not have any paperwork on it, just get the title transfer paperwork from the DMV and have him sign it. Then just explain it to the person behind the desk, usally there is not a problem. They may even tell you if there is anything special you will need to do. Did that a few years back with a boat and trailer I picked up.

You can also put homemade on the title application form. I had to do that last summer with a trailer I purchased from someone on this site.

The homemade route works. Downside is you have to pay taxes on the value of the trailer or prove you paid taxes when you purchased the materials to build the trailer.
