Jigging Demons

Recommended Posts

I finally got my mitts on some of the new Custom Jigs and Spins Demon Jigging Spoons today. I opted for the size 6 in the red glow and blue glow spoons...they will be perfect for the crappies and sunfish. These have been a tough one to locate here in the SE , but Fleet Farm was just putting them up on display hooks when I happened by. Now they need one hook less in their display.

After getting home with these critters I got out the flash and gave them a shot and, man, do they light up. I picked up some of Custom's finesse plastic too, so now with these new spoons and the tackle from JB I should be set up good to do war with dinner plates.

Custom, JB, Marcum....they're all remarkable companies. Every year they have something new, not just improved, to service the needs of the casual as well as the competitive fisherman. Custom and JB (Jig-Eye) both have new jigging lures that reek of promise and Marcum has simply left the competition standing alone in the shadows with the new LX5 and the LX3-tc. The up-grade for the old LX3 is a world ahead of the competition. All of these guys deserve a hearty thanks!

In all but the worst of cold front fishing, these have been my start-out bait. The JiggingEye from JB is on another rod and both get the initial nod for finding fish such as the crappies.

If all I can get the fish to do is look when I mark one or two, I'll get that more aggressive bait up and drop down something that isn't as nervous in a different hole usually less than a foot away and work it. That usually seals the deal.

CT-I have yet to buy one of these... I really need to. I saw a bunch of them at the Winnie Ice series event. They really do look like a great lure, and I was surpried how small them made them down to.

The Jig Eye on the other hand..I do have a few of... They have been my go to lure for a deadstick rod this winter. Awesome lure.

Kudos to both lures!

The size 6 is an awesome pannie and crappie search lure. They fish fast and are small enough for the bulls. Right now I have three rods geared for this kind of search fishing and all have the jigging spoon type baits on them. One is the Jigging Eye, one is the Jigging Demon and one is a 1/16 Go Devil. Each has it's own profile niche and is fished in a specific way....all are producers.

Custom Jigs and Spins makes a good product, regardless of lure model or make. No surprise to me that they've come out with another effective jigging spoon.

I've done very well on the Slender Spoon for walleye and smallies in the past. It's actually been one of my go-to's. While I don't have a lot of experience with the Jigging Demon, I can already see its application towards panfish, perch and walleye.

Small jigging spoons like the 1/16oz Go Devil have really increased my panfish catches when running and gunning with a search lure on aggressive fish. The smaller Jigging Demons look to have a similar effect...

I have mentioned in other threads that when these "calling spoons" are getting attention but no takers, I will have another rod with a small jig/waxie right next to the hole. As soon as I get a looker that won't commit, I get the spoon up and drop the small jig. 90% of the time that will seal the deal. Sometimes I will pull the second line, and when a snooper comes into veiw I'll drop that small jig down the same hole as the spoon. When it stops at the depth of the spoon, the spoon then comes up.

Attracting neutral fish is about half of the potential that these spoons will provide an angler. The angler just has to interpret what he sees going on and then come up with an appropriate action to change the tide at hand.

Just for reference, here's a pic of the new Demon Jigging spoon...

I agree, those size 6 are quite the little morsel. They could even be used to work over finicky fish too, I would not go as far to say they are only a search lure intended for aggressive fish...

Tom and I had a conversation about these jigging spoons this past weekend. Tom has really put these spoons through an extensive test and he's found some very positive results.

Jigging spoons for panfish definitely have their place and time.

Got my batch of demon jigging spoons yesterday gold and gold with red glow should be my go to for shallow water perch when there a little off and want something smaller. I was happy to see that CJ&S carry go devils too so I took the opportunity to restock my 1/16 oz. go devils pink/white and perch colored ones.

We've been getting into some nice crappies in southern Minnesota.

They have been where the crowds are now to around the edges of the crowds to places most wouldn't think of fishing. We've caught them in 36", 17" 14", 6", & 26" of water. They are mostly feeding on red worms and daphnia (bugs).

However it seems minnows have been the bait of choice

Don't be afraid to up-size get some of the #8 and #6 Demons and Jigging Demons going with a whole crappie minnow, not the micros either. Our fat fries were the only other ice jig that produced big crappies in the past week.

They also are relating to the bottom for the most part.

Here are some pics.

We threw everything at em and those Custom Jigs and Spins Demons and Jigging Demons have been the ticket and we tried a lot of differant tackle.

Here is what downsizing our jigs and or bait have been producing:

I as well have had success with all of the Custom Jigs products. The Go Devils used to be my favorite for bring the fish in and getting the bigger fish in the pack to hit. I have found the jigging demon to now be right at the top of my list. I use the #4 vs. the #6 as I like the bigger profile for crappies. However as Matt and Tom stated the # 6 is smaller and a good calling card for the sunfish

I still wouldn't lower the Go Devil in the 1/16 oz size for pulling out those bigger crappies. I've had times when it was the go to lure. It drops faster and you have even more control over the jigging motion on a Go Devil.

If crappies are my primary target, the glow red go devil or the same color in the JBLure Jigging Eye in 1/16 are still my start-up jigs. Hands down. If the need to come down in weight and profile becomes apparent, or if I am looking at finding mixed fish, the #6 jigging demon is on the line.

Perhaps it is optimism, but I usually try the most aggressive lures right off and look for hitters. Finding the fish is actually my intention with the larger, noisier baits. While they may not hit them hard enough to get to the hole, they will come to visit and make their presence known. That is when the serious fishing begins.

We have a gem of a lake in the west metro where one can sit on the crappies and sunfish from sun up to when you decide to leave. The crappie are white and blacks in the 8.5-12" class with the majority being that perfect 9.5-10" class. The sunfish are 7-9"

Anyway the moral of my story is this. I generally do go to the larger profile jigging spoon for the bigger crappies. This trip out I refused to go to the larger profile as I was getting a good mix on my ultra light willow stick and ratso. My partner did use the spoon and out did me in the 11" and bigger crappies 3-1. The flip side was I did get more bull sunfish mixed in on my tiny jig and pole.

I will be there next Saturday and will mix it up for the larger fish. What I like about when you are sitting on schools of fish all day is you really can pull out the differnt presentations and plastics to see what works best. Of course it could be something entirely different the next trip.

Pike....

Indeed, those jigging spoons are more for the crappies. Very large sunfish will put the smack on them too IF they are in the prime feeding mode.

On another note though, during the hot summer months while chasing sunfish, I have outstanding luck nailing sunfish with a 1/16 go devil and the #4 and #2 frostee jigs. I haven't had the jigging demons out on the briney yet but they are doomed to be summer luggage. So are those JBLure 1/16 Jigging Eyes.

Many peoleknow of the merits of using typical winter tackle for summer sunfish, but few understand that larger more aggresive winter tackle like these jigging spoons is a deadly technique when the water is warm.

Have I ever said that I LOVE jigging spoons. I tied on a Custom Jigs & Spins 1/8oz Jigging Demon in Glow Red for the Cool Cats 2006 event on the Horseshoe Chain and had great results.

The Channel Catfish on the Horseshoe Chain are partial to Glow Red and the 1/8oz sized Jigging Demon allows you to get your bait down to the fish in a hurry. The channel cats don't sit in one spot too long and when you find them on your locator, you need to get your bait down quickly.

On Saturday morning, this nice Horseshoe Chain Channel Catfish along with many others fell victim to the Glow Red Jigging Demon by Custom Jigs & Spins. I was fishing the Jigging Demon Spoon tipped with a minnow head.

And much to my surprise, this nice 19" walleye also liked the looks of the Jigging Demon.

I didn't catch any crappies on Saturday, but there is usually a nice crappie or two that can be picked up as well using the same techniques while fishing channel cats on Horseshoe.
