Bleating

I use the Primos Bleat Can. I was wondering how everyone uses there calls? I have used it to call in a very nice 7 point 2 years ago but have not have any response to it since then. I was wondering how often you call with it. I am just wondering if I am doing something wrong. I call about every 1/2 hour three times. What are your thoughts. I am looking for help cause I FINALLY get to hunt this weekend and want to get the thirdy pointer!

I don't use my call to bring deer in. I use it if I see a deer and it's not going to come my way. A lot of times deer will get scared off by the call, but sometimes they can turn a deer around and give you a shot. Your best bet is to be quiet and still, you have a much better chance if the deer doesn't know you're there.

I try to very the amount of bleating I do, anywhere from 2-4 bleats, occasionally only one. I've called in deer I've seen & others I haven't seen. I haven't really had them run off because of it, but certainly had many that paid no attention to it. I try to only do it a couple of times on a sit & if I've done if there a few times recently, except during the rut, I'm likely to not use it at all the next time out. It seems like it's more effective if they haven't heard it much.

The past two years my wife has called in her buck out of the swamp with the Primo Middle sized call. Both bucks were within 25 ft of her stand. Last year it was a 8 pointer 210 lber, and this year 3 pointer aprox. 150 lbs.

Our neighbor tried it opening morning and called in an 8 pinter and another 8 pointer after the first one left. He is a trophy hunter so he did not shoot the deer. He was amazed at how well it worked. He said he would have never used one until he heard the same noise while hunting last year. He is a true believer in it now.

My wife told me that she bleats about 3 times and then waits about 15 min, and then bleats again.

Thanks for the responses guys. It sounds like it is all on how the deer react to it. I would think that during the rut the deer would be attracted to it if the rut is in full swing but we will have to see. Thanks again.

The Can worked for me this past weekend. I was in a swampy area still hunting and pulled out The Can once I was in a decent area to get a shot off. Almost as soon as I let the first bleat out followed by a couple tending grunts I heard deer running right at me through the water. They were a pretty good distance away so I had time to set up for a shot and wait for them to appear. The first was a doe, followed by the nice 8 pt I shot. There was a third deer that I heard run off but didn't see. I'd also have to say the you should be waiting for the rut to kick in, it is in full swing right now.

I've had mixed response with them... About 2 weeks ago, I spooked off a nice 10 point that I didnt realize was close to me when I used the can... And I sucessfully mimiced a bleat call to pull a really nice buck off the trail of a doe on monday night. That was really cool, he turned right around and came in but didnt give me a decent shot.

Have had really good success with the "CAN". A great tool in my mind. Like most calls, they work really well in the "Pre-Rut", where the bucks are ready and are out cruising trails looking for their first hot doe!!

I use a bleat in conjunction with a grunt. Where I will turn the can over two to three times, then sound off with some soft grunts then roll over into a tending grunt. My thinking is, a dominant buck that is without a doe and hears another tending what he believes is a hot doe, will come investigate. Two of the 7 shoulder mounts on my wall have been lured to a stand location doing this. I do about 3 to 4 sequences an hour...

A note, I have had some luck during the middle portion of the rut, but nothing like the pre-rut phase. Usually now, most bucks are with a doe or trailing a doe that will come into estrous soon. It is just so much harder to pull a buck already in love with any call. But it never hurts to try it, as some bucks are still cruising from one doe to the next.

A number of the guys I hunt with use the "bleat" cans with mixed results at best. Any thing from mild interest, (stopping if walking), to blasting out of there like you kicked them in the but. Not that they don't work in some cases but I don't think I will ever use one where I hunt.
