Troublehook
Gander mtn has a deal right now that ends soon. i have a tight budget ($130ish) and need ur input as to what brands to buy. I need two med action ice poles for about $20, ice line (4lb)a sled for pulling gear, maybe not an auger because the one i want (srtikemaster lazer hand auger{by the way does anybody know the price for that?}) is at mills fleetfarm, boots, rapala ice crainkbait/jid thingys, ice jigs, jigging spoons and maybe some other stuff. JigginIsLife
im thinking that it is a long shot for getting all that for around 130 dollars. Best bet would be to check at a local cabelas in the bargin den. Considerable dropped prices and usually a decent selection. A good pair of boots will run you a good ammount of money too. Deitz Dittrich
I too hate to burst your bubble.. but I dont think your budget will allow what you want... Prioritize what you need morethan you want and then buy that.. but you cant get all the gear you want for that price.. or getter yet find anfishing buddie that already has stuff and fish with them...Decide then what you need from there. Bob_D
For boots....Go with military Mickey Mouse boots. Without a doubt the warmest boots I've ever worn. And....You can get them for $30.

Bob_D
I've always purchased mine from Sportsmans Guide. The black ones (the ones I wear) are not rated as low as the white ones, but I've never had problems even down to -20F. If you have the extra coin and want ones rated for a lower temp, you can get the white ones for $80.Make sure you are getting the real deal. Buy only the U.S. Military ones. Don't get the Swiss ones or whatever they are. They are NOT the same boot.
Troublehook
might they have them at a store?
Bob_D
Army surplus stores have them, but around here they want $60-$70 for the used black ones.
nate18
If you are looking for Mickey Mouse boots that are inexpensive, do a search for "Barre Army Navy Store, Mickey Mouse Boots". I purchase from this store a few years ago and the boots are in great condition. Used w/out valve have withstood temperatures below freezing for me w/out windchill. I hope this helps. -nate
Captain B.R.K
$130ish for all that you listed above. If you don't put the boots into that total equation, you might be able to pull off your wish list. I'd go with a combo or two by NatureVision. They came out with new combo's endorsed by Dave Genz. Decent combo's for $29.99. That will put you at $65 w/ tax (rounding up). Then you need line ($2.00 x 2= $4.00 plus some tax). So you have spent $70 for combo's and line. Depending on what species you want to target, go and spend $20 on some tackle. That should be plenty to get you started with panfish tackle. Granted that won't buy you much walleye/pike tackle so help yourself out and spend $30-40 to get yourself started for those species. Now you are at $100 or $110. You'll want to buy a scooper, possible bait bucket, small ice tackle keeper and misc. items so budget $10 or so. Now you are at $120 plus some tax. Now you are geared up to hit the ice, BUT with only one problem.......no auger! Go with a Mora auger, they do just as good as a Strikemaster Lazer but at a fraction of the cost! *Trade in a combo plus some tackle to pick up an auger. Then your $130ish might be do able.Good Luck. Big Dave2
You seem to have done pretty good so far. You went for the necessities first. #1 was the auger, nothing else can happen without it. #2 was the combos. If you really wanted to go cheap, just remember that there have been a LOT of fish put on the ice with very cheap jiggle sticks. I would get 1 or 2 as back ups to your combos or panfish set-ups. I wouldnt worry so much about expensive jigging spoons just yet. You can amast them one at a time if you like. I would get a good assortment of cheap jig heads and plain and colored hooks. These are a lot cheaper and you can aquire the spoons and specialty tackle as you visit different lakes and find out what the fish are biting on at that particular lake. Its always a good idea to need a piece of tackle when visiting a new lake so you have an excuse to visit the local bait shop and strike up a comversation with the clerk about the lake you are going to be fishing. He will also be more willing to open up and give out some details if you are buying something.Next on you list of essentials is a bait bucket(I like the insulated ones)and a scooper.I would also get a set of ice cleats for those boots and some sort of light. I would get a head lamp or you might prefer a lantern. Then start saving for other gear you will want in the future.
TNFL
Here is a tip. If you can get by this year, I picked up a few combos on clearance in early February this year. They were the "HT" brand if I remember, and all between 7.99 and 15.99 at the sportsman's wharehouse. I'm sure all the stores have sales that time of year though. Plus there is plenty of time to still try out your new gear. I agree, it doesn't hurt your wallet as much if you just buy tackle a little here and a little there. Plus its nice to support the little guys.
Bob Horn
I would get an auger that will start and cut a hole every time. The second thing I would buy is a St. Croix Legend ice rod and reel with a good drag. I use Tica Cetus. I can catch fish without a sonar, it takes longer to find fish but I can do it. The Legend lets you see the bite and catch more fish. I don`t understand why icefisherman seem to buy the cheapest rod and reel they can find and it`s one of the most important tools you need on ice.
