joe_stack20
I just bought a used browning BPS. Just wondering if it is a good waterfowl gun or if it is better for upland game. Anybody ever have any troubles with this gun.
Walleye Guy
I have had one since the second year they were introduced (1980ish)and it has been a great gun. It has seen many years in both the field and the duck blind. Personally I think the bottom eject/load and top of the receiver saftey make it the best designed pump out there. Its great for both right and left handers and the action is very smooth in my opinion. The one word of caution I would give you is that it is difficult to reassemble the action if you fully disassemble it. It is at least the first couple time you do it. Getting all the pieces aligned including the double slide bars is kinda tricky when you first do it.Other than that it has been an exceptional gun. bmc
I have a BPS to and absolutely love it! It does awesome as double duty on upland birds as well as waterfowl. I really like the bottom eject too as I hate it when you have empty shells floating all over the place after shooting at birds. I'm switching from the mod. steel choke to the full steel choke, way better pattern with the steel.Brian
LOTWKIng
I also own a BPS. All of my friends make fun of me for owning one and say it's going to jam up on me sometime. The funny thing is it hasn't jambed yet(knock on wood). Take care of it and it will take care of you. I duck hunt more with it than anything and the main thing to remember is to not short stroke. It will be fine for whatever you want if you take care of it. Good luck.P.S. sucks for the guy who got rid of it.
Gissert
I have two. One 12 and one 10 gauge. Both have been great guns, and have never let me down inthe field. I like them above all because I shoot left handed, and the bottom eject is nice.
lawdog
I have the BPS 10 and I think Walleyeguy understated the biggest complaint I have. That thing is worse than a little cumbersome to put back together, its a complete nightmare! I took it apart once, and holy smokes I swore I'd never do it again. I could have disassembled, cleaned and reassembled all three of my 870's by the time I got that dang thing back together. The top safety takes some getting used to too if you generally shoot other kinds of guns. I've lost a nice bird or ten because of that over the years...It is a reliable gun though, I've not jammed it up or had any problems with it functionally. I'm just not that fond of it though. WALLEYENUTZ
Hands down the BEST pump you can buy!!!!
lawdog
No Walleyenutz, we are talking about the BPS, not the 870 Wingmaster!!!
sheepheadslayer
do they make a 3 1/2 wingmaster that is universal for left or right handed shooting???????? I don't think so. By far my favorite pump shotgun. Only complaint is that it is a little heavy.
lawdog
OK, maybe it is the best backward shooting gun for lefties... I'll let you have that. As a right handed shooter though, it doesn't compare to my wingmaster!!
sheepheadslayer
have a right handed wingmaster that is used for slug hunting only and yes it is a nice gun.
WALLEYENUTZ
I have a wingmaster that I use for a paddle!!!!
joe_stack20
lawdog... t here is only one gun for you!! I saw that BPS in very good use this weekend, and took it apart cleaned it, and put it back together, with no problems, guess that wingmaster is for the clumbsy numble fingered hunters!! lawdog
Did you take it all the way apart? Slide off and trigger out and everything? That's the part that stinks is those goofy rails it has. And only one gun??? What will I do with the other two 870's I have and the two Beretta auto's and my BPS 10 and my rifles and my smokepole and my pistolas... Good grief I'd feel pretty much unarmed with only one gun.
joe_stack20
WOW good greif what are the odds that we picked the topic of the gun that you seem to dislike, but talk the most about!!!
lawdog
I don't know the odds... Now did you take that thing all the way apart or not?The gun does shoot well and its never given me any problems. A lot of big honks met their maker due to that beast, but I just never have liked it for some reason and mostly because of the cleaning. I should sell it really, I don't hunt geese near as much anymore anyway.
joe_stack20
Take it all the way apart???? Yup sure did, oiled it back up, and slapped it back together, not really anything i would call a struggle, just have to use common sense and all is well!!! And you can shoot more than just geese with it anyways, but i suppose that is why you have your wingmaster!!!
ewirz
I got a 12 for a college grad present. I never thought I'd own a gun that I'd like more than the Ithaca I was shooting. Love it. I was also worried about the safety on top but it has never given me problem. I didn't think it was too bad to get back together, a little fussy but not a nightmare. Great gun.ERW
lawdog
My BPS is a 10 guage, there isn't a lot of call for it. I've shot ducks with it late season, but its way overkill for most things.I might try taking it apart again one of these years and see if its easier than I remember. That was a long time ago... Papa Woodie
I own a BPS and taking it all the way apart, cleaning the rails, and trigger mechanism isn't much of a task. Yes, i admit the first three times there was a lot of curse words, but i got it down right, just found out i wasn't aligning the rails up correctly to put the trigger back in. NEVER bend the rails no matter how much you may think the only way to get the trigger back in is to do it. The rails do not rest totally against the butt side of the gun, 1 of them must be up about an 8th of an inch. (that was the hard trick to learn). Now i think i could do it with my eyes closed! shinde
I've had my BPS 12 since college (1981). It's one tough gun, and I love the bottom eject. Once you get used to the safety on top, you'll wonder why they aren't all there. Here's a link to a site with great pictures and detail on disassembly for cleaning. I haven't tried out the instructions yet, so you're on your own there, but should be helpful to have such detailed instructions.http://www.refugeforums.com/refuge/showthread.php?s=&threadid=145851
wrshog
You mean like Mossberg does??? The 835, now there's a gun!!
poutpro
I have had troubles with my BPS. It is more of a single shot than a pump. Last outing, I couldn't get shells to cylce through, so I had to watch everyone else unload on huge flocks of divers.
slick2526
Ive been looking at the browning bps's also i want a 3 1/2" 12 gauge. But if im looking at the site right they only come in synthetic. seems as the biggest is only a 3" in the walnut stock. I would like that walnut stock but if its only a 3" i wont be purchasing it. can anyone back up this info? or disagree with it.thanks
