Best excuse for getting out of work.

What is the best excuse you have heard or used to get out of work? Several years ago I guy I knew who was a very very avid hunter called in sick to go deer hunting. He shot a very nice buck that day, but his picture was posted in the local paper and he was called to the office to explain. He simply stated that he had " buck fever" He got the day off and a few more with out pay but kept his job cuz he was at least honest about it. I have called in for my kids and taken them fishing, told the school it was a rec day. Was once called in to explain my action to principal. Told him that my son will learn more and remember the day of fishing more then that day of school. He agreed but requested that I did not call them in as "gone fishing" days. grin.gif

I work as a senior manager for a fairly large organization. The best reason I've heard in my 25 years was from an employee who called in and reported that he had "Dutch Elm's Disease " and would be out of work for two weeks. In case some of you don't know what Dutch Elm's Disease is, it affects Elm trees and has completely decimated them in many cities. When I heard that he was striken with such a deadly illness I immeadiately called him, wished him well and asked for a doctors excuse. After a couple of days of waiting around and receiving no excuse I had one of our supervisors drop off a letter granting him two weeks off with no pay. The union didn't even gripe about my actions. This occured 15 years ago and even today we still have some laughs about that one.

Best one I heard was a guy who called in sick in November due to a flair up of his "Huntington's Disease" which is a real disease. He didn't have it, what he meant was he wanted to "hunt a ton".

Second best was a fellow that had attacks of Malaria. Didn't matter that he had never been outside the US. He used this for about 6 years before he was caught.

"boss, I wanted to come to work today, but if you could see the look on my dogs face when I was going to leave... you could tell that he really wanted to go hunting today, so I won't be in."

"A buddy of mine is going ice fishing today, He said that he was going to drill 4 holes and he can only use 2. Someone might trip on the 2 unused holes, so I think I better go and keep an eye on them."

Not really an excuse, but a "cute" little story along those lines...

An old employee of mine called me one thursday morning and told me some WAY OUT story about an "illness" he was coming down with. Highly contagious!! Wouldn't want the other folks in the department to get it too... How very thoughtful!! So, kind of knowing what was up, I agreed to the absence and told him "that's fine, but you've gotta take me with... A moment or two of dead silence... Then he came back with "Okay, I'll pick you up in an hour".

We ended up hitting the Iowa opener at his parents farm. Birds galore!! It's ended up being an annual trip for us. grin.gif

Not work, but back in college a few years ago. On the way to deer camp, I called one of my instructors from the cell phone,to let him know that I wouldn't be in class the rest of the week.(Wed-Fri) He asked me, "What about the test we have on Friday?" I hummed and hawed a little bit. I asked if I could take it over the phone...He agreed to it. By the time we were pulling into deer camp cell phone was starting to break up, and I had absolutely nailed my quiz.

Life was very good that year at deer camp. We still have a good chuckle over it.

Many years ago, I called in sick once stating that "I have a bone in my leg". I was pretty good friends with the boss, and he knew what was up...it was a slow time at work, and as I was on hourly, it was just a day without pay for me...

Once knew a guy who stood up in a meeting and declared "I have an 11:00 emergency that I have to get to," and so had to leave the meeting. This was somewhere between 1 and 2:00 in the afternoon. We knew it was a major emergency with a response time like that.

Called into the secretary with a bug one morning, but my boss called one of the other guys from work on his cell phone who was also sick and asked to speak to me. blush.gif

Told him it was absolutely deadly and the only known cure was fresh fish... cool.gif

Could have gone over better

Also had to call in after an early morning outting with moronocitus-drivzus because the guy I was out with didn't fill the gas tank and only realized it after we'd spent a couple minutes trying to figure out what was wrong with the motor. Only one paddle along, man it looked like a lot of work, but sometimes the ultra-slow troll is dynamite! wink.gif

Had a job when I was younger try to pull my week vacation about 4 days before our wyoming trip. Used sightfisher's excuse and when I got back I had a raise and an extra two days of vacation time for that year. Still not sure what happened on that one. confused.gif

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
