Speaking of superbraid's....I'm a big fan of the power-pro, but my question is this:

How often should I be replacing power pro on my spools?

When it gets ruff looking. Dont worry about color, the less color the more castable it is. When Im jigging I go threw so many jigs between losing them and switching them I never worry about changing it til it gets too low on the spool. I have trolling reels with power pro from 3 years ago on them.

One trick is to take and spool the PP off 1 spool onto another and then you have the fresh PP to use.

It doesnt break down like mono so you can use it a long long time. For me I think it actually saves me $ even though its more expensive in the short term I think its cost efficient in the long term.

By the way Derrick you have too much time on your hands. Buy some Power Pro and go fishing man.

Although I have not had to many problems in the past with breaking power pro due to age, I would still replace it about twice a year. Normally it's not an issue anyways because of the number of times a guy cuts and reties, pretty soon he runs out of line and doesn't have a choice.

TonkaBass- YIKES, that gets expensive for line! $14.99 x # of reels + sales tax = $$$ just for reels.

I can see changing line once or twice a year might be the norm for a guy that puts a lot of time on the water, but for a guy like me that gets out 1-3 times a week during the summer, I think buying it once is fine.

The only rod I have to worry about changing out is my jigging rods because they get used a ton and I wind up cutting so much off 6" at a time. If your changing PP out twice a year your missing the best time with it. Heck it takes a few weeks just to get it loosened up a bit. Unless your always cutting it off like I do on my jigging rods. Try the spool onto another spool trick it will save ya $ BRK.

I really have had good luck with the power pro. Although I just bought a few spools of the fusion for $4 each. Just couldn't pass on the price.

I replaced the SW 50 with PP 50 and went fishing for a few hours today. Boy when people say the color wears off quickly they weren't lying. With in a few hours there was a definate change of color.

How long does it usually take for the wax coating to wear off?

Between the SW and the PP I really couldn't tell a big difference between the two. The SW might have casted a bit better, but I'm sure it will get better once the wax wears off, as the SW was good and broke in. Then again, that's a big MIGHT have casted better. Might have been in my head too.

I've said this before but, I'll probably stick with PP because it is definately thinner.

Got to test out the strength of it today too. Got her wrapped up real good in some lili pads. Just took the line and wrapped it around the net handle and pulled, yanked 4 or so of them right out of the ground, roots and all.

BTW, one of the best knots I have found to hold was a uni knot doubled over. Double the line and run it through the eye and tie a uni knot. My average break strengths were from 39 to 41 pounds. Was definately better than most of the other knots I tried. I managed a 45 out of a bimini, but it only happened once. There was just too much variation in breakages from the bimini. They broke anywhere from 28 up to 45 pounds. If they weren't tied perfectly they broke rather prematurely. Besides that a uni is pretty much fool proof. Even when I tied one rather poorly on purpose, I still managed about 33 pouunds out of it.

If I find time off of the lake tomorrow I'll work on an abrasion test.

Derrik, I just bought some new pp and i love it!!!! No abraison test nessescary unless u insist on doing it. My trolling rod has pp on it and it has yet to get a nick in it. got her tangled round the gunwale once too. that pp will stand up to abraision way better than mono. now that i think about it ive had mono break on things that the pp didnt even nick on. tried jiiiging for eyes with mono agian. I hate IT!!!!!! PP is so sensitive i dont think im ever going to buy mono agian.

I just know that we have been pulling some really big fish out of some nasty debris on power pro. I am the only one having the landing success ratio this far.. and the 80# power pro is the ticket.. these have been fish up to 40 pounds landed in concrete, granite, rebar, 1 1/4" bolts sticking out of a wall, throw in some steel.. it is a fishermans nightmare. I still lose a rig here and there, but I havent had a fish break me off yet. I had one fish much larger than the 40 figure out a way to spit the hook back at me.. but I can live with that.. at least I didnt lose it to the snags.

We have other rods spooled with fireline and mono.. and 40# and 50# power pro.. these lines did not hold up as well, but way better than the other lines of similar strength.

The bad part about the 80# power pro.. sometimes you reel the snag in.. 100# trees, half full sand bag, etc(very hard on the hands).. and not to mention destroying hook points regularly, and straitening out many heavy wire hooks.

PP and Stren Superbraid are problably the best super lines on the market right now. The palamar knot is the prefered knot for super lines. The Trilene knot tends to slip and let go. Pure Fishing (Berkley) in Spirit Lake IA did a knot test on several different knots with different types of line. The Trilene knot was superior for monos and the Palamar was a close second. The Palamar was the best for the superlines. If you find poor knot strength with a certian line, check the line itself for strength. Spiderwire is a pretty good quality line but you are not the first person to say they have had knot problems. Good luck sorting it out.
