Is it big enough???

Last year I bought a new Nils 3" hand auger. I can drill 10 holes in 5 minutes without breaking a sweat. I fish mostly crappie and bluegill with the occasional pickerel or walleye. Is 3" large enough (I know). I have had a few break offs right at the hole when trying to land pickerel but not sure if its the hole or there teeth. Any tricks on handing fish thru small holes??

Ha not for anything with size no way are you going to get a northern up a hole that small. Bigger walleyes no smaller ones probably. I myself hate to fish in anything smaller than a 8in and personally I use a 10 all the time. I have lost to many nice walleyes and Notherns in 8" holes so I stick with the big guy.

Atleast a 7" and even better is the 8" and even better yet are the 9 and 10". Nothing worse than having a fish that won't get up that hole. That 3" hole would be a good vexilar/marcum hole

I use an 8 and a 5 dependgin, and I would go no smaller than a 5.

If I know I won't be moving around a lot or while fishing in my permanent shack I use a 10" auger.

If I know I will be mobil I use a 7" auger. Much easier on the back when you need to make swiss cheese! I've lost very few walleyes in the 7"er and landed accidental pike up to 14lbs plus it's perfect for panfish. If you are targeting big pike I would go with the 10"er for sure.

I use a 10" for the perm and a 9" for going portable. But if its really early ice I'll go with a 6" hand auger. And nothing smaller than a 6".

That 3" would be perfect for my transducer. I got the dual one on my Vex, its the 9º and 19º. It would be a a perfect fit since my transducer is probably 2.25".

If I needed a quick drink of water a 3" would be nice. It wouldn't do around here to fish out of. I know you already bought it and I don't want to make you feel bad. Just look at the money you'll save by never getting a wall hanger through that 3" hole. Laugh it off and buy at least a 6" auger.

Or if you're in "big fish" water, you could stagger drill several holes together. I didn't even know they made a 3" auger, but I would agree with the 8" min. I would advise against a 10" if you are taking little kids out.

My mistake, the hole is 4 1/2 inches not 3. I have heard some people saying that they cut 2 or 3 holes in a clover leaf pattern resulting in one large hole. I may do that since I already have this one and it cuts thru 6+ inches of ice in about 4 seconds.

Years back, one of my sons inherited my old 6 inch Mora. He came home one day and threw it in the corner of the garage and said he was using my 8 inch Jiffy from then on. He was on a small Minnetonka lake and caught a Northern that wedged tight in the hole. The week before, I caught a nine pounder through a 5 inch hole, so I wonder how big his fish was. I haven't found anything that I can't get through an 8 inch hole.

You guys are right one about a not using a 10" auger with kids around. I learned something this year that I didn't think was possible and that is that my size 14 Rockeys will fit in a 10" hole doesn't seem right but it is possible. When ever I have kids I will have to take that in account but I still will never have anything smaller than an 8" myself. Even at 4.5" that is one small hole. I see your from NY fish must be a little smaller than the ones we grow out here in MN and the Dakotas HAHA.
