favorite summer top water lure

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a favorite lure for muskies during the summer? For like fishin' rock piles, weeds, and rock piles with weeds crazy.gif. I have caught one 40" on a weed line with a big top water bucktail a.k.a in my house "the washing machine" and had a big one hit it on a rock pile with weeds. {The whole reason I am askin' this question tongue.gif}. So, if anyone has any favs out there, I sure would love to hear them.

Favorite topwater has got to be a Poe's Giant Jackpot...nothing better than a 3 inch high wake following that lure. Second would be a Bucher Top Raider. Caught a 48 1/2 incher on that lure once and it is still my largest ever. Hopefully the next month will go quick!!

I definitely agree with Extreme that the Giant Jackpot is the best topwater lure for muskies. I've gotten the most strikes on this bate with a slow retrieval, often times went I let it pause for ten seconds and then start walking it again. It's killer over cabbage and coontail beds, and is definitely one of my favotire lures, not just my favorite topwater lure.

I'm a big fan of any of the prop style baits like the Top Raider, Pacemaker and Top Walker, just to name a few. I'm not a fan of the walk the dog style top waters. I don't have the confidence in them that I do with the prop style baits, so they don't see much time for me. But there are definitely a ton of big fish caught on them.

If you know where a big one is hanging out or you just had one blow up and miss, you can't beat a Hawg Wobbler or Creeper.

My faorite topwater is the unwieghted Viper, this rides alot lower in water then the Giant Jackpot and Doc, moves a lot of water and has killer action, plus you can weight it and use it like a glider. I'm sure the infamous Weagle will liley become a real close second as it has a bigger profile and rides the same way... Death March baby...

I also enjoy prop baits like the Top Raider, the LOWRider, and the Awaker... I'm looking to pick up a Pacemaker this year, I like the click of the Pacemaker on the retrieve.

Good Luck this year... So many baits so little time

Thanks guys I'll have to get me one of those giant Jackpots. I've heard of them and seen them in action I just don't Know why I haven't bought one yet tongue.gifcrazy.gif!!! I get a muskie catalog every month from Muskies inc. and I see them and I go to grab the order form and mom walks in and yells "Your paying that much on a muskie lure!?" Then I can't order it 'cause she thinks I can get a better price for it some where else when the catalog says "HUGE SALE ON ALL LURES!" then she gets mad and it's like livin' in he11 for the rest of the night 'cause I want the lure and she doesn't want me to spend that much tongue.gif, then i can't find the order form the next day. Hey, sometimes I agree with her but those are great muskie lures and i'm willing to spend that on a lure that catches big fish.

Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it.

cmoredrakes- where did you get the catalog on products, or was it muskie inc. magazines that you get like each month? I checked out their site and didnt find catalog but found magazine subscription. let me know thanks.

Well I would have to go with Poe's Jackpot, I love working with it, even though I have not had a strike or a follow on that lure. I have only fished muskies for about a full 1 1/2 month last summer and had a couple follows, just one hitting 50 inches, a few strikes. This summer I will be chasing them more than bass. Good luck to you all. smile.gif

Gotta go with the thunderhead here!! with two over 50 last year on that one it has a sentimental plop plop to it for me. That is my favorite prop bait. Topraider would be a close second. As far as my second choice i have to go with the jackpot as the merit of that bait is undeniable allthough hookup can be a little precarious at times. As said before hawg wobbler or a creeper as a throwback to a blowup or follow can't be beat, allthough i won't use one as a primary search bait because of the lack of speed when working them. Haven't had a chance to try my weagles yet so the jury is still out on that one allthough i am excited to give it a rip.

Without a doubt my favorite summer muskie lure is the Bucher SuperTopraider. Caught all my Muskie's on it last year, It looks pretty beat up right now. Might have to replace it this year.

Quackaddict9, I get the catalogs from subscribing to the Esox Angler magazine. They must be associated with Muskies Inc. Every month they send me a magazine with a muskies inc. catalog. But, you only get certain stuff when your subscribed for so long. My aunt subscribed me about when I was 8. So far I've gotten a hat and the catalog comes. But, the magazine is pretty cool, it gives you the latest reports and there is even a photo page. Also it gives you reports on walleyes on Mille Lacs and what's workin' the best for them at the time the magazine comes {Man those guys catch big fish shocked.gif}, too. But, I'm sure there is other ways to get a catalog but that is how I get mine. But, like I said earlier, I have to sneak the order form into the mail before mom see's what I'm buyin' crazy.gif.

1. Hawgwobbler

2.jackpot

3.topraider

4. Take favorite slide bait remove all weight looks like a eratic viper. it swithes from being on top ot the water to an inch or 2 below. I get the most explosions with this bait but it is so eratic that it doesn't have a great hook set ratio.

5. Boogerman buzz.

I boated most of my fish on topwater last year. And one thing I notice is I never get action when I try to make em look pretty out there. I like to twich a bit and switch em up out there. Side to side baits I'll flop them from one side to the other harder sometimes. And prop baits I always give an extra tug every ten feet or so.

It is hard to beat the Hawgw or the jackpot on a nice choppy day.

[pleasebecomeasponsor]- I've tried the Hawgwobblers before and they just make too big of a splash for my taste. I believe they work and all, but I just scare the fish away when that lure hits the water. By the way, I just end up catchin' big bass on the buzzbaits tongue.gif. Thanks for all the info guys I'm sure I'll up my odds a bunch if I try some of these baits you guys have shared, I really appreciate it.

Try em all youll find you r favorite.

Maybee with a little chop on the water the hawg won't make as big a splash. There two sizes as well.

Either way cant go wrong with any of these peoples baits.

I like The super toprader I helped my dad land a 54in I've fished muskies for as long as i can remember and the most luck i've had was on prop baits but I also helped my dad who is 43 land a 51 1/2 on a dock and a 52 on a prop bait so for summer when the water gets hot the fish get going hot on top waters

The Weagle for sure. The Weagle has put a ton of big fish in the boat for me and has a much better hooking % than the Jack Pot.

Woooosh Woooosh

My best topwater bait has been Gooch's Tally Whacker. I have 6 or so I don't know if they are made anymore or not. They were made By Wayne Gooch a guide in Hayward WI. It is also killer at night fished slow on monster largemouth's.

Oh, I don't think you have to worry about scaring 'em away with a big splash--I think they like that, lol. For about the last 20 years or so, when we've been out catching panfish on the muskie lake my folks live on, there's always an unfortunate crappie/sunfish that's a little too small for the basket that swallows the hook too far. They end up suicidal and gradually float away from the boat with the occasional small splash. It's usually around splash five that the water explodes and he's not there anymore. I've taken this into consideration when using my favorite top water lure--Super Top Raider. I don't just give it a constant reel-in, I let it land, wait a few seconds, give it a hell of a jerk and let it sit about 10-20 seconds and jerk again. I'll usually do this five or six times before I begin to reel it in. A wake up call, if you will. It definitely simulates the wounded panfish and almost always gets their attention. The 44 1/2" in the pic was caught on a Super Top Raider last Labor Day. The fish were insane that weekend. At one point we saw 6 fish in 45 minutes. The one in the pic was trying to eat a waterskier, no joke! This (Contact US Regarding This Word) keeps flying by our boat and after the second pass I noticed a swell in the skier's wake. on the third and fourth pass I saw the fins come out of the water in the skier's wake. I nailed the spot and made it about two turns of the handle and she inhaled. Too bad the skier didn't fall down, lol. Also, my favorite bass lure either the Zara or Super Spook seems to intrigue them sometimes. I once had two muskies follow a leopard frog Zara Spook on the same cast. My guess is they must have been late spawners, because the larger of the two stopped about 30 feet from the boat and went back, but the smaller(male i'm guessing) came right up to the boat and gave an investigative nudge to the lure and headed back. Needless to say, that was the day I became an addict. Oops, this got kinda long, but this is my first day in here and it's good to see all the other enthusiasts.
