49ers: Rivers mentioned in No. 1 overall pick trade rumor

THE NEWS

There are rumors of trade talks between the 49ers and Chargers involving the No. 1 overall pick in next month's draft, according to an ESPN HSOforum report. In exchange for giving up the first pick in the draft, the Niners would get quarterback Philip Rivers from the Chargers. Rivers, who was selected with the No. 4 overall pick and acquired by the Chargers in the Eli Manning trade, played a backup role last season due to the surprising success of starter Drew Brees.

OUR VIEW

It's hard to say whether this trade will come to fruition, but it makes sense for both clubs if the Niners feel that Rivers has more upside than rookie signal callers Alex Smith (Utah) and Aaron Rodgers (California). Meanwhile, the Chargers would gain the top pick in the draft which they could use to select a wide receiver such as Braylon Edwards (Michigan) or Mike Williams (USC). We'll continue to follow this potential story and keep you posted on all of trade rumors leading up to draft day.

As much as I like the regular season, the off season is almost as much fun with all the speculation. Less than a month til the draft. smile.gif

When I first heard this I thought it was crazy, but then somebody pointed out the advantage to the 49ers is that San Diego has already taken the big hit on the contract bonus for Rivers. SF gets a QB they want but saves on the cap hit.

As a Vikings fan I hope this doesn't happen. We need two QB's to go off the board before we pick. If they aren't off the board than other teams are drafting players that we could use. I'm counting on San Francisco and Cleveland taking QB's with Chicago and possibly Tennesee cleaning up if one slips. I don't want a QB to be there I want Mike Williams, Derrick Johnson and Braylon Edwards to be there, in that order.

Piker you brought up something I thought about after I posted. And that is the possible effect it could have with the Vikings. If this would go and the Chargers end up taking one of the two WR, I don't think the other one will be available for the Vikes at 7 as I think there is another team ahead of them that would draft the other, or a team would trade up in order to pick ahead of the Vikes. I don't think it would effect the fallout of defensive players as much.

Yeah, it's something I'm concerned about.

I'm counting on 2 QB's, 2-3 RB's, likely 1WR, and possibly Johnson(Texas) or one of the CB's being gone.

Ordinarily having a choice between Adam Jones and Antrel Rolle wouldn't be bad, but with Smoot on board I'd rather not. Of course Jones would be an excellent return man, but in my perfect world we have the choice of Edwards/Williams and Derrick Johnson. I'd take Mike Williams.

All that said, I have complete confidence in our guys in the personnel department as it pertains to the draft. Aside from the clock blunders at the draft, it's hard to argue with the selections. I'll respect whatever they do, especially after being [PoorWordUsage]ed off about them taking some Kevin Williams guy over Jimmy Kennedy. That seemed to work out.

I'm hoping for Mike Williams and Erasmus James (see KFAN's mock) or I also would like Thomas Davis (S - Georgia).

Remember that Tampa Bay supposedly promised Williams they would take him with their pick, that's why at first Willaims did not plan on working out at the combine and when he did decide to run the 40's he wasn't prepared and produced a few slow times.

But you are right, if 2 QB's do not fall by the 4th or 5th pick, neither Williams nor Edwards will be there for the Vikes. All 6 teams ahead of us are rumored to be in trade talks as far as trading down. And by the sounds of it they all do not want to pay the money that those pics will command.

It will be a very interesting next few weeks for sure.

Here's how I see it. We'll get one of the following players with the #7 pick.

WR- Williams, Edwards

RB- Benson, Williams

LB- Johnson

I would not be mad if they took any one of these players, and one of those players will be available at #7. Then we have the #18 overall pick and we'll get a stud there.

Get Nugent in the 2nd round and we're siting pretty grin.gif

Ole#1 take Johnson off your board the Browns are grabbing him at #3. They shored up there running back position with Droughns. They will be looking more defense in the later rounds as Crennel will be going with the 3-4. I am looking at a DT for there 2nd round pick and maybe offensive lineman and LB's the rest of the way. I am pretty pleased thus far what Savage has done on paper. Proof will be in the pudding.

He's one of the best coverage LB's in the draft he had 6 interceptions this season. Perfect for Romeo's 3-4, he's a playmaker. If he slips it's because Cleveland traded down I know Dallas is foaming at the mouth to get him and keep him in state but your right alot of rumors are out there and you just never know who slips through the cracks.

Ouch Buzz....... I'm trying to forget about that. Good thing we passed on Marcus Allen so we could take Darrin Nelson. Also its great that we passed on Warren Sapp to pick Derrick Alexander.

Hopefully we won't be putting this years draft in the same breath as those.

I'll never forget the feeling when big fat Sapp fell to us at, I believe the 12th spot. Only to have the Vikings take something called Derrick Alexander. We don't have good luck with anybody named Duane, Dwyane, or "Derrick Alexander".

We shouldn't worry so much, we're going to get a great player at that pick and also at #18. I honestly think that picking a RB that early is a waste, look at the guys last year going after #20. Two really nice backs. Not to mention that if they really want an RB this year, Barber in Rd. 2 or 3 would be a better value. That's just my opinion since I like where we're at with our RB's. I'd rather draft any defensive position, any O-line spot, or a WR over any RB in this class. At the #7, that is.

I will attempt to try to help you guys feel a little better about the Vikings draft picks... You want to talk about bad picks let's talk about the Cleveland Browns recent #1's, Tim Couch - gone, Courtney Brown- gone, Gerard Warren-gone, William Green - going all first round clowns.

Head coaches Butch Davis and Chris Palmer there's two (Contact US Regarding This Word). We have an embarassing recent draft history and I hope Savage put's a stop to the bleeding.

Warren Sapp he's on the downside of his career. His best years are behind him now.

Did anyone else read Chris Mortensen's recent article about the QB from Arkansas Matt Jones? This guy seems really interesting 6'6", 242, sub 4.4 time in the 40, an almost 40" vertical.....

Here's a scenario....

We trade Bennett and our #7 pick to Miami for their #1 pick plus their second round pick.

We then take one of the stud running backs with Mia's #1 pick, take Jones with the #18 pick and then Nugent with Mia's second rounder. It would solve our RB situation, would give us a potentially GREAT WR and would solidify our kicking game for years to come.

I can see it now.....Culpepper hands off to Jones on an end-round...Jones then passes to Culpepper for 20 yards and Culpepper breaks 2 tackles for a run after catch for 60 yards and a TD.....against the Pack of course grin.gif

Not to play devils advocate or anything, but of the two teams mentioned, Arizona and Miami, I don't see why either one would trade with the Vikes for one of their backs. Miami if they decide to go RB, will have their choice of any of the top 3 backs. I think the upside of all three college players is better than either Bennett (injury concerns) or Smith (already in NFL drug program). The only way Arizona would maybe do the trade is if during the draft it appears one of the three won't drop to them, then maybe they would pull off that trade, but I would guess they would try and trade up to get one of the college guys instead. I'm guessing the Vikings will have the same backfield next year as this year.
