fishing from a kayak

FisherMissis

Question

Hey guys, here's my newest question. What are the "top 10" things I NEED in order to fish from my kayak? (It's an open-cockpit style...nice, comfy adjustable seat with a cup holder!) I can only comfortably accommodate 1 plastic tackle box. So far I have a telescoping fishing rod w/reel, a small anchor, a stringer, and the above mentioned, plastic box (you know, the kind that latches and you usually put several of these together in a soft side bag.) I just can't deal with live bait very well in the kayak. I did use a styrofoam worm box last year but that was a mess... So, what do I put in my plastic tackle box? And I just bought a "Dick Tracy type" grin.gif wrist-watch depth finder... Will that thing be worth the price tag?!?!!

Hey, the rod holder is a GREAT idea! Is there something available that would mount on my kayak? Not so sure about fishing for muskie from my kayak though.... too scary! crazy.gif I seriously would flip over in my kayak trying to land the thing, which would be quite humorous for others on the lake, but NOT a good time for me. grin.gif (I still haven't mastered the part about getting back in my kayak once I flip it.)So, I'm thinking of panfish, bass, and walleye lures. Thanks for the suggestions... never thought of a 6 pack! grin.gif

as far as a rod rack , you can checkout places like cableas , gander or web sites that handle canoes(sp?) or kayaks.a landing net would be a great help too.( even a smaller one) then you don't have to lean over to land the fish.for lures; checkout the panfish and bass forums. you could use many types of plastics, crankbaits, and spinners. del

I know... that's the tricky part about fishing from the kayak. I need to be able to secure everything to the kayak. Usually I tie stuff to the seat straps and hope for the best. I wear a sales rep sample front pack that I picked up at a garage sale and then keep my itsy-bitsy tackle box in there. That's why I need the fewest, most essential things. NO SPACE! grin.gif

I've been fishing out of a 2 person open kayak for several years and honestly it's way more fun than my bass boat. Never flipped it or even came close so far although it's a little tough getting in and out. A good paddle is a must. One where the water doesn't roll down into your arm pits! Pretty much just use spinnerbaits, weedless spoons, weedless jigs and beetle spins. No live bait needed. I just stuff any fish I keep in the back behind the seat. Last year I rigged up a mount for a Humminbird pirahna fishfinder transducer. Almost to techy now.

One of the most fun things to get used to is having the fish (big northerns and Bass) pull you around. Hmmmm...never thought of Muskie fishing from it!

You rigged up a Hummingbird? I was thinking THAT is exactly what I needed (once I got over my "kayak purist" ideals smirk.gif) I bought the Hummingbird wrist watch thing, but I haven't opened the package yet because I had serious doubts about it working well enough to be worth the price. It would be great to be able to mount something with a larger screen to my kayak. But then again, I am sort of fond of the little watch idea (makes me feel like I'm in a James Bond movie) grin.gif What kind of kayak do you have? How did you mount it? Hmmm... I'll have to check this out.

THANKS! I just checked out Spring Creek and I found a BUNCH of good stuff on that site! I have a Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 and I saw that they now make an ANGLING version of that kayak. Maybe that's what I need. grin.gif

Here's the Kayak I got at Fleet Farm only mine is red and doesn't have any sealed compartments.

Here's the Hummingbird Pirahna I just sit on the bottom between my feet and strap down. It runs on AA batteries but I use the spare for my Aqua Vu instead. I threw together a rather crude transducer mount by glueing together some plumbing PVC pipe into a capital E shape, then pushed two of the posts in to a couple of 1" holes in the back of the kayak (not sure why they are there) and hung a piece off the side that I drilled and mounted the transducer to.

It works great on small ponds, and as a backup when I smack the lower unit of my bass boat on the rocks and open it up like an eggshell!!
